The municipality of RT Romualdez is named after the
late mother of Mrs. Imelda Romualdez Marcos, former
First Lady and Minister of Human Settlements and
Governor of Metro Manila Commission. The town is comprised of barangays Agay, Tagbongabong, Humilog, Basilisa, Balang-balang, Panaytayon and San Antonio which formerly belong to the municipality of Cabadbaran. The municipality was created as a result of representations made by Assemblyman Antonio R. Tupas of Agusan del Norte to the Interim Batasang Pambansa in 1980 to make barangay Agay of the municipality of Cabadbaran a municipal corporation. Acting on the petition of the Agayanons and other neighboring barangays to be separated from its mother municipality and having qualified in the requirements provided for under the law, Assemblyman Antonio R. Tupaz fathered Parliamentary Bill No. 1291, which was approved. The Commission on Election pursuant to Proclamation 2297 of President Marcos passed COMELEC Resolution No. 1604 promulgating the guideline and instruction to be observed in the holding of plebiscite in the seven barangays to comprise the municipality of RTR. The plebiscite was held on September 7, 1983 supervised by the COMELEC and the result was that majority voted in favor and only 45 voted no and one abstained. The residents are aware of santan as their town's flower; nangka as their fruit; banaba as their tree; maya as their bird and Red as their color.
