Barcoo grunter, Scortum barcoo, Rock Hole, near Oriners Station [PH]

The Barcoo grunter, Scortum barcoo (family Sparidae), is common in rivers and streams in the southern Cape York Peninsula gulfland. They have a heavy-set body and a small mouth. They are readily identified by the black blotches on their sides, varying in size, shape and location.

This fish is edible, cooked on the coals of the fire.
