"Someone Gave Her a Whale"

Someone gave her a whale,
hand-size, stuffed, blackandwhite, carnival trinket
and a tiny tag "made in Taiwan" stuck to one fin

The stranger saw the fiveryearold on the hot
amusement park asphalt
one hand in her daddy’s hand
one hand free
and

Gave her a whale

Someone gave her a whale,
a teen in a midriff top on the midway
and her boyfriend who won the whale
looked at the unknown girl
with the slightly sunburned shoulders
and a solitary braid--
and gave away a tiny prize

Someone gave her a whale,
Which she slept with last night
and laughs about
and sings about
and
though she may not remember faces
she remembers how giving feels
and debt-free living
feels

loving whales and the people that give them,
