Many people have the false idea that belief in one God (monotheism) represents a higher evolutionary level than believe in many Gods (polytheism). As a matter of fact, the exact opposite is true. Everywhere in nature we see a great variety of different living things, therefore there must be many Deities to create such diversity. One God creates simplicity, many Gods create diversity.
Everywhere in the world a variety of natural and cosmic forces are at work, which we describe as Gods and Goddesses. They exist in higher worlds as spiritual Beings or spiritual energies, in the material world we find these energies behind the phenomena of nature. In every stone, plant and animal the powers of the Gods are at work. The old Pagan art of astrology seeks to reveal the interests and workings of the Gods in human beings, in order to turn them away from certain actions. Even today, the planets carry the names of Roman Gods.
The ideas about the appearance of the Gods have come down to us; these are ancient images that can help us to come into contact with the Gods they represent, in order to experience their help and support. The Gods and Goddesses are around us and in us, not only in some far off 'life to come'.
An almighty Lord God as autocrat of Heaven, as the various churches preach, does not exist for us.
