Notes for Minna Langemann:
Minna Langemann died in an explosion in the munitions factory where she worked. Normally she would have gone home for lunch at the time the explosion took place, but she stayed later because she was planning to buy her sister a birthday present. The accident was caused by a series of mistakes in the factory. Also, there was only one wooden staircase to the upper floors and the doors opened inwardly, and in the panic following the explosion there were 15 people trapped by the doors. Also, the windows in the upper floors did not open, so there was no chance of escape in that direction.
Minna's brother August was sent to identify her body, and he was only able to identify her by her red hair.
The 72 victims of the explosion were buried in a mass grave in the 'Ehrensfriedhof' in Meiersfelder street. They were considered 'Heldinnen und Helden des Heimatheeres' --- heroines and heroes of the home front.
The explosion was not reported publicly at the time because of fears that it would hurt home front morale.
On the 50th anniversary of the tragedy, the 'Lippische Zeitung' newspaper ran a story on it featuring the eyewitness account of a survivor, Walter Harting, who was a fourteen year old apprentice at the time.
