Staff Spotlight on Mrs. Nelson

Mrs. Nelson has been teaching at Monte Vista since 1994. What she enjoys about teaching at Monte Vista are the terrific students, supportive parents, the great staff and beautiful campus. She gets excited about "watching children's faces light up when they feel good about what they have accomplished." Environmental issues are dear to Mrs. Nelson. Some of her favorite assignments/projects help students become more aware of their world -- they may make their own compost heap or adopt an endangered animal. Mrs. Nelson received her B.A. in Liberal Studies at CSUN and her Teaching Credential from CSULA.globeA special memory from her teaching experience is when a group of four boys She had in 1996 and 1997 made it their goal to visit her every day after school for their 5th and 6th grade years. If she was absent one day, the next day there would be a note saying "Jay, Isaac, Eddie and John were here, the record is not broken!"

In her spare time, she plays softball, goes snowboarding and enjoys dancing and singing Karaoke. She enjoys going to movies and playing with her kids. History is Mrs. Nelson's favorite subject and it's evident in the movie she enjoys watching over and over -- Braveheart. Her favorite children's books are the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. Her favorite children's author is Raold Dahl. When asked about her favorite groups or type of music, Mrs. Nelson replied that Peter Gabriel is her favorite musician. Her love of music must come from her mom, who worked with --Elvis Presley.

Mrs. Nelson grew up in La Crescenta with her brother. She remembers fondly her family's summer camping trips. Her family loves one another no matter what. They are steeped in tradition and make time to be together. They love telling jokes and laughing together. Her great grandfather was the first superintendant of GUSD. His name is R.D. White and there is a school named after him in Glendale.

Mrs. Nelson's Homework Tip: DO NOT PROCRASTINATE.
