WELCOME TO
MRS. OLSEN'S
3rd GRADE CLASS

Staff Spotlight

Mary Olsen has been teaching at Monte Vista since 1984 and teaches 3rd grade. She received her Masters of Education in History from USC. She became attracted to teaching by watching her grandfather who was a teacher in Pasadena. She is especially excited about "helping kids become interested in the world around them and be turned on to learning." Her favorite subject is Social Sciences because it "teaches us about the world around us." She enhances this love of Social Sciences by having her classes do a "My Heritage Report." In addition to this project, she also assigns a Hands-On Science Program (just in time for Science Fair, Mrs. Olsen?) and enjoys studying oceanography which culminates in a boat trip. She's involved in a lot of extracurricular activities which include a Mentor Program and the Assistance League.

She and her husband, Lee, have three children, Jeff - 23, Eric - 28, and Tiffany - 31. They also have two dogs. A Cocker Spaniel named Tina and a Keeshhound named Keesha. She enjoys sports and some of her favorite teams are of course the USC Trojans, the Lakers, and the Dodgers. She enjoys an active life and her hobbies include skiing, hiking, and traveling to her favorite vacation spots of Mammoth and Balboa Island. When she wants to settle down she enjoys reading historical novels, mysteries, and biographies. Her favorite colors are red or blue. Her favorite fast food restaurants are Taco Bell or In 'n Out.

Mrs. Olsen's Homework Tip: Develop a regular routine, same quiet place/time and materials every day.
