Shirley Sycamore is a 1st grade teacher who has been at Monte Vista since 1983. She received her B.S. in Elementary Education from Utah State University. She was drawn to teaching because she loves "being with children and seeing their cute personalities." Her most memorable moment in teaching was when she had been out for several weeks due to major surgery. Upon her return - to Open House - she was greeted with "...a quilt with all my children's hand prints and signatures..I was so touched." Ms. Sycamore is one active woman. She is involved in District and private tutoring, School Site Council, Monte Vista 2000, after school Dance Club and Primary Chorus. She also assists with the Video Club. She feels that music and dance are very important for creative expression.
Ms. Sycamore obviously loves teaching because when asked whether she had children, her response was "I have 31 adorable children ages 6 and 7." In addition to being a fan of Monte Vista children, she is an avid UCLA fan. She has football tickets on the 45 yard line and follows UCLA basketball (bet you were happy a couple of weeks ago!). She has many favorite authors including Mary Higgins Clark, Thomas Thompson, and Sidney Sheldon. She is quite eclectic in her musical taste ranging from Madame Butterfly to Aida to the Beach Boys and Neil Diamond. When asked to tell us something that would surprise us, leave it to Ms. Sycamore to do just that. She was on the Celebrity Dating Game show. Unfortunately, she didn't tell us which rerun we would have to watch to find out if she was chosen for a date!
Ms. Sycamore's Homework Tip: Give your child a quiet work place and take an interest in their homework assignments. Encourage homework every night.
