France, '98: Chilean Team detail
Background Information: Soccer is a way of life in Latin America as
Basketball courts and baseball diamonds are scattered through out the US,
in every city, town, village you are sure to find a "cancha de futbol".
In the Summer of 1998 the World Cup Soccer Championships will be held and
all Latin American eyes will be watching. It is a social event. Victories
are celebrated with celebrations in the streets: honking horns, waving
the flag, partying, gathering in the plaza central all night. Losing however
is unthinkable so we won't mention it. See attached photos.
Activities:
Part I: Divide kids into 16 teams. Have teams choose their own names, symbols and colors. Alphabetically list the names of the teams on large butcher paper in a 16 team tournament format. Begin eliminating teams by flipping coins. Winners advance to the next round. Repeat the flipping of coins until one team wins. At this point, a math lesson could be incorporated using the concept of probability. Record each coin flip as it happens, as to whether it is heads or tails. At the end, tally the heads and tails, and see how close it comes to 50% each. Students could graph the results, to work on graphing skills.
Part II: For teachers that handle some of their own P.E. time, teach the rules and basics of soccer play. For Spanish classes, rules could be developed using the command form.
