the following songBackground Information: Gabriela Mistral was born in the North of Chile. Her given name was Lucila Godoy Alcayaga, but she chose her name from two authors she admired. Gabriel D'Annunzio an Italian and Federico Mistral from France. She was an elementary teacher in rural schools and began several all-girls schools. Gabriela Mistral won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1914. However, many people were surprised because they considered her "la poeta de los ninos" (poet for children). While she did write poetry and songs for children, (such as "Dame La Mano") she also expressed her unique opinions about the political life of the times. She also had an editorial in the local newspaper. She has a strong, even difficult character which contributed to her controversy. She published in 1923 Lecturas for Mujeres . This is an anthology for the schools that all girls should know. Gabriela Mistral and Pablo Neruda were friends. Very little of her work has been translated.

After learning the song and learning the meaning and vocabulary, students may do a copy change of the poem ie. Instead of using hands use other body parts like Give me your eyes and we will watch, Give me your feet and we will run.... "Dame tus ojos y miraremos, Dame tus pies y corremos," etc.... Students can incorporate their own names into the song as well, "Te llamas Pedro y yo Cristina" etc.... Try substituting other nouns for flower/flor hill/colina, etc. ie. "Como un solito sol brillaremos" "Like a lonely sun we will shine."
