El Libro de Las Preguntas by Pablo Neruda

Time: 15-45 min.
Background Information:
Pablo Neruda was born in 1904 and died in 1973 from cancer. He joined the communist party in 1939. In 1948 he was exiled because of his communist beliefs, but returned a few years later. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971. Because of Pablo Neruda's writing style a new verb was invented. Nerugar: to change the ugly to the exquiste. He has three houses in Chile one can visit: La Sebastiana in Valparaiso, Isla Negra, and La Chascona in Santiago. He wrote love poetry as well as political work.
Procedures:
Part I: Teach students about metaphors. Start with one noun and write a definition in another way. For example: Elefante: Juguete de un gigante, o Mariposa: Arcoiris con alas. Acuarela de colores. Flor que vuela.
Part II: Then have students read, translate, and analyze the following questions asked by Pablo Neruda.

2. Juan Luis Guerra a popular singer from the Dominican Republic incorporates one of Neruda's questions "Dime, la rosa esta desnuda o solo tiene ese vestido?" in his song "Bachata Rosa". This song is a Rumba and students may like to dance to it. We've included the lyrics and another with recognizable words deleted and underlined. Put this copy on an overhead, have students number their papers 1-20 then as they listen several times to the song they can guess the words. Later have class reveal the answers as you translate and analyze the poetry.

3. For an older audience consider showing the Italian movie "Il Postino" where Pablo Neruda teaches a lonely postman about poetry and metaphors as he falls in love for the first time and wants to woo La Bella Beatriz to love him in return. It is in Italian but has subtitles in English.
