GOLDEN WORDS

So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up ... the fever left her and she began to wait on them."

(Mark 1:31)

And He came to her and raised her up, taking her by the hand, and the fever left her, and she waited on them.

Mark 1:31 (NASB)

So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.

Mark 1:31 (NIV)

What a wonder this is! Jesus cured Peter's mother-in-law instantaneously, and "the fever left her and she began to wait on them." vs 31.

What a grand visual this is for the tired and discouraged wife and mother who has had a chaotic day. Our reassuring and responsive Jesus helps quickly and affectionately. He wants us to tell Him when we are so tired we want to get off the edge of it all and run away from our necessary responsibilities. So He comes and takes our hand and lifts us up. Thank You, Jesus!

"...He leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul" Psalm 23:2b,3.

"Perhaps He sees that the best pastures for some of us are to be found in the midst of opposition or of earthly trials. If He leads you there, you may be sure they are green for you, and you will grow and be made strong by feeding there. Perhaps He sees that the best waters for you to walk beside will be raging waves of trouble and sorrow. If this should be the case, He will make them still waters for you, and you must go and lie down beside them, and let them have all their blessed influences upon you." H.W. Smith, Daily Strength for Daily Needs, page 31.

In Hebrew the quiet waters means a quiet resting place. We all want an oasis away from the murky and troubled waters of life that seem to drown us at times. Pure water has a soothing and refreshing effect on us. Our Shepherd leads us to the main well of living water from which flow the gentle tributaries of peace, compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
Jesus asks us to draw deep from the well of His living water, and not with just a paltry cup or broken cistern. "`[But] my people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water" Jeremiah 2:13. Of ourselves, we are broken and bruised and blackened with offenses and defenses.

This jewel of a psalm has calmed countless hearts. It is beside the still waters where the Holy Spirit meets His saints, not in the winds and waters of strife, for He cannot lead us to the placid waters if we are rushing ahead of Him. If we don't have the time then we must take the time to be led to the peaceful stream of morning hours with Him. This is when He prepares our hearts for the battles of the day. This is where the victory is won before the battle is engaged: in prayer, seeking our instructions for the day.

Let us rest awhile by the still waters of His gentleness and concern.

"Without the shedding of blood is no remission."

- Hebrews 9:22

"And these are ancient things"

-  1 Chronicles 4:22

In no case, by no means can sin be pardoned without atonement. It is clear, then, that there is no hope for me out of Christ; for there is no other blood-shedding which is worth a thought as an atonement for sin.

We were chosen from before the foundations of the world. Everlasting love went with the choice, for it was not a bare act of divine will by which we were set apart, but the divine affections were concerned. The Father loved us in and from the beginning.

Speech

Synesthesia is the rare ability to perceive words in colors. Only a few people have this gift. It's not a matter of being psychotic, or drunk, or drugged. It is an actual phenomenon. For those who have this gift, sounds are seen as well as heard. Harsh words, for example, may be perceived as dark and ugly. Kind words are perceived in soft colors. What color would characterize your speech and mine? How would the words of God be seen? Would they be brilliant as gold? As crimson as Calvary? As white as snow?

- Robert C. Shannon, 1000 Windows

A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver.

Proverbs 25:11

The words of wise men are like goads, and masters of these collections are like well-driven nails; they are given by one Shepherd. Ecc. 12:11

... ...and by his light I walked through darkness!    JOB 29:3 NIV

Spiral

by Pat Nordman

"You have circled this mountain long enough. Now turn north"

Deuteronomy 2:3

Sometimes we move in hollow circles that become dreary, but the emblem of the Christian life is a spiral. Boredom is contrary to the Christian life for God leads us forward. There are three traits among many that should get us off the mountain of monotony:

1) Growth, a going forward to a fulfillment and a final victory. We are constantly moving on in life. "And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature. . ." Luke 2:52."But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ" 2 Peter 3:18. One of the great promises is, "He who overcomes (grows) will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son" Revelation 21:7. We are cautioned, "Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day" 2 Corinthians 4:16. Although the body is withering, the soul is weathering the storms and growing stronger in Christ.

2) Enthusiasm and earnestness for this gift of life. John Wesley is quoted as saying, "Get on fire for God, and men will come to see you burn." Jesus says, "Because you are lukewarm. . .I am about to spit you out of my mouth" Revelation 3:16. In a tepid condition one brings neither disgrace nor dishonor; one simply vegetates. Lethargy brags that it lacks nothing and can now take it easy. But Jesus says, "As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me" John 9:4. We must work.

3) Enterprise, or a plan for our life. Sometimes we need to "turn northward," to take a different direction in life so we may regain our zeal. Turning north, we are invigorated and strengthened for the new winds and windings of our high way of life. We should know when God gives us our marching orders by the inner peace we feel when we finalize our new plans.
