GOLDEN WORDS

You neglected the Rock who had fathered you; you forgot the God who had given you birth.

Deut. 32:18 - New Living Translation

You deserted the Rock, who fathered you;
you forgot the God who gave you birth.

Deut. 32:18 - NIV

You neglected the Rock who begot you, And forgot the God who gave you birth.

Deut. 32:18 - NASB

Of the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful, and hast forgotten God that formed thee.

Deut. 32:18 - KjV

God has given us life. It is by His hand that we receive our daily sustenance. Why would we choose to live our life without the God who has given us life? Even as Christians, we often choose to live our life without God. We ignore Christ, the Rock. We make decisions and live our life as though God does not exist. Might we, as Christians, give God his rightful place in our lives.

Delight is keener, suffering is richer, thought is more exciting, love and friendship are deeper, steadier in the long perspective of God.

Daily Meditations by Pat Nordman

"When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds the tongue is wise" Proverbs 10:19; "The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil..." James 3:6.

"Words are like leaves; And where they most abound, much fruit of sense beneath is seldom found." Pope. One cannot talk about nothing forever, so the talk finally degenerates into small rap about people. Some wonderful advice comes to us from the ancient Orient. We should test our words to see if they can pass through three golden gates: 1) Is it true?; 2) Is it necessary?; 3) Is it kind? Someone left us this wise advice: "Nature has given to men one tongue, but two ears, that we may hear from others twice as much as we speak."

Dr. James T. Jeremiah of Cedarville College in Ohio gives an apt description of the backbiter: "It has been suggested that biting is not always done with the teeth. The tongue feels soft compared to your teeth, but it is twice as sharp. A backbiter is not a person who bites back, but one who bites behind your back." Hannah More handled backbiters and talebearers by asking them to go with her to the person slandered to see if the story was really true. Cuts from a knife heal, but we have no guarantee that cuts from our tongue will heal.

"R. Simeon b. Gamaliel said to Tabbai his servant: `Go and buy me good food in the market.' He went and bought him tongue. He said to him: `Go and buy me bad food in the market.' He went and bought him tongue. Said he to him: `What is this? When I told you to get good food you bought me tongue, and when I told you to get bad food you also bought me tongue!' He replied: `Good comes from it and bad comes from it. When the tongue is good there is nothing better, and when it is bad there is nothing worse.'" (Misrash Rabbah, The Interpreter's Bible, V.4, page 890.) "The Sovereign Lord has given me an instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary" Isaiah 50:4.

"He hath said."

There may be a potent medicine in the great pharmacopoeia of Scripture, and you may yet continue sick unless you will examine and search the Scriptures to discover what "He hath said."

"Understandest thou what thou readest?"

-  Acts 8:30

Don't Wait

Trapped without a sleeping bag or a tent in the fierce blizzard that assaulted the summit of Mount Everest, mountaineer Rob Hall spoke with his pregnant wife by satellite phone as dusk fell on Saturday, May 11, 1996.

"Hey, look, don't worry about me," were the 36-year-old New Zealander's final words, his voice weakened by bitter cold and frostbite.

Hall had conquered the world's tallest mountain five times. But as death approached the glory of conquest faded. His heart turned toward his loved ones. By daybreak the next day rescuers had abandoned all hope of saving Hall and seven other climbers, victims of the worst tragedy to strike the 29,028 foot peak since it was first scaled in 1953.

Men, don't wait for tragedy to strike. Don't wait until "some day." Open your hearts toward your wives, your children and your loved ones. Today is the day to set aside personal ambition, dreams of glory and the hunger for conquest. Today is the day to love your wives as you love yourselves.

Today's  Devotion

But my mouth would encourage you; comfort from my lips would bring you relief.

Job 16:5 (NIV)

At Just the Right Time
(Romans 5:6)

by Cathy Vinson

Each generation passes on to its successor a built-in fact of every relationship: conditional love. Without words, the teaching is transferred onward upon its continuum...If something I like is evoked within me by you, I will invest myself in you, reward and love you.

Over and against this, God comes. He waits until JUST the right time to stand in stark contrast. (At just the right time) "while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." "At just the right time when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly." (Rom 5:8,6)

Why is that the right time? To present the widest gap, and presenting a gap, to demonstrate the expanse of God's love. Where God moves, it seems He delights in bridging gaps. Our God is a God who justifies the wicked (Rom 4:5), who gives life to the dead (Rom 4:17), and who calls into being things that don't exist as if they did exist (Rom 4:17). He moves in the arena where we find ourselves NOT in control. To the wicked, He justifies. To the dead, He gives life. To the powerless, He saves. This is the faith of the Gospel.

So, for our sakes, there was a gap, and at just the right time God filled it..."WHILE we were STILL sinners, Christ died for us." Rom 5:8 Thank you, Lord, for Your timing!
"But my mouth would encourage you; comfort from my lips would bring you relief"

Job 16:5 NIV
