Golden Words

Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise. ... The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

James 5:13, 16  NIV

The most powerful resource available to the Christian is prayer. We can go directly to God and talk with Him. Often one will say, "All we can do now is pray." Praying is the first thing we should do. It is not a last resort of the Christian. It is the first, best and most powerful thing we can do.

It has been said as: Don't just stand there -- Pray something.

"Prayer, like radium," scientist Alexis Carrel once said, "is a luminous and self-generating form of energy."

"But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way" (1 Corinthians 14:40), "for God is not a God of disorder but of peace..." (v.33). There is a proper time, proper use and proper place for everything.

Paul was addressing the church here, but it applies to the whole of life. Johnson wrote: "Order is a lovely nymph, the child of Beauty and Wisdom; her attendants are Comfort, Neat-ness, and Activity; her abode is the valley of happiness; she is always to be found when sought for, and never appears so lovely as when contrasted with her opponent, Disorder."

From Order comes a fruit of the Spirit, Peace.

"Grieve not the Holy Spirit."

- Ephesians 4:30

"Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him."

- John 12:2

All that the believer has must come from Christ, but it comes solely through the channel of the Spirit of grace.

It was well to be Martha and serve, but better to be Lazarus and commune. There are times for each purpose, and each is comely in its season, but none of the trees of the garden yield such clusters as the vine of fellowship.

What comes from sleeping two in a bed?

Eccles. 4:11
And on a cold night, two under the same blanket can gain warmth from each other. But how can one be warm alone?

Consider the Possibilities

When Robinson Crusoe was wrecked on his lonely island, he drew up in two columns what he called the evil and the good. He was cast on a desolate island, but he was still alive--not drowned, as his ship's company was. He was apart from human society, but he was not starving. He had no clothes, but he was in a hot climate where he did not need them. He was without means of defense, but he saw no wild beasts such as he had seen on the coast of Africa. He had no one to whom he could speak, but God had sent the ship so near to the shore that he could get out of it all the things necessary for his basic wants. So he concluded that there was not any condition in the world so miserable but that one could find something for which to be grateful.

Unconditional Love

by Pat Nordman

I will love them freely ...

Hosea 14:4 NKJV

Unconditional love! Sounds great, doesn't it? To love in spite of instead of spite ... Unconditional! Who can do this? How can I love this person who has ripped my heart into tiny bits of hate and resentment? Oh yes, I read and reread that lovely passage from 1 Corinthians 13 when I feel the anger and hate welling up. I have even made a poster out of the NIV version of Verse 5: "[Love] keeps no record of wrongs" to keep me from dredging out the old woe-is-me's in times of anger.

Imagine my surprise when I finally discovered -- with our Good Shepherd's prodding and in spite of my plodding -- that this is a choice we make. Indeed, we can decide to be pleasant or unpleasant when we wake in the morning. It's the old "as-if" principle: I'll act as if I truly love this person, and before I know it, I do! It sneaks up on us, thank God.

Years ago I read the following: "I love you today, where you are and as you are. You do not have to be anything but what you are for me to love you. I love you now; not sometime when you are worthy, but today when you may need love most. I will not withhold my love, or withdraw it. There are no strings on my love, no price. I will not force it upon you when you are not ready. It is just there, freely offered, with both hands. Take what you want today. The more you take, the more there is. It is good if you can return love; but if you cannot today, that is all right too. Love is its own joy. Bless me by letting me love you today." Author Unknown.

There it is -- unconditional, no strings attached, I love you as Jesus loves you. I love you because God first loved me. He loved me enough to forgive my sins, so how can I do less for you? Forgive me for not loving you! Forgive me for the wasted words and years when I could have held and upheld you and made both our lives easier. Love is so much easier, really. I mean the love that wants what is best for you and will help you with your life.

Now excuse me while I go bury the old heart at the foot of the Cross ..
