DECEMBER 11

GOLDEN WORDS

Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples.

1 Chronicles 16:24 NIV

The real miracle in my life had nothing to do with [a cancer] operation on my [pitching] arm. It had to do with something Jesus Christ had done for me two thousand years before, when he had died for me and made it possible for me to live in fellowship with him.

December 11

There are two angels that attend un-seen
Each one of us, and in great books record
Our good and evil deeds.
He who writes down
The good ones, after every action closes-
His volume, and ascends with it to God.-
The other keeps his dreadful day-book open
Till sunset, that we may repent; which doing,
The record of the action fades away,
And leaves a line of white across the page.
Now if my act be good, as I believe it,
It cannot be recalled. It is already
Sealed up in heaven, as a good deed accomplished.
The rest is yours.

Longfellow.

Are we keeping our angel very busy today?

Spurgeon's Evening for December 11

"So shall we ever be with the Lord."

- 1 Thessalonians 4:17

"Whose heart the Lord opened."

- Acts 16:14

Oh, how sweet the prospect of the time when we shall not behold him at a distance, but see him face to face: when he shall not be as a wayfaring man tarrying but for a night, but shall eternally enfold us in the bosom of his glory. The Lord himself must open the heart, to receive the things which make for our peace. He alone can put the key into the hole of the door and open it, and get admittance for himself. He is the heart’s master as he is the heart’s maker.

Love Came Down

Love came down at Christmas,
love all lovely, love divine;
love was born at Christmas--
Star and angels gave the sign.
Worship we the Godhead,
love incarnate, love divine;
worship we our Jesus--
what should be our sacred sign?
Love shall be our token
love be yours and love be mine;
love to God and neighbor
love for prayer and gift and sign.

-- Christina Rossetti, 1883.

... ...and by his light I walked through darkness!    JOB 29:3 NIV

The Timing is Right

by Pat Nordman

"And who knows but that you have come to royal position for such a time as this?"

Esther 4:14 NIV

Our oldest son died during the Christmas holidays. Since he chose to die, I decided to share with our four younger sons a verse that has had great meaning to me personally. A few days after his death I took them back to Chuck's bedroom and asked them to sit with me on his bed. Then, after a silent prayer for wisdom to guide these tender little hearts, I tried to explain to them about God and His purposes for us. I told them that we are born neither too soon nor too late; that we are born at this time because God has purposes for us and no one else. We have jobs to do that no one else on earth can do.

There were hundreds of verses I could have chosen that might have been more relevant. I don't know. But I still believe, years later, that the Holy Spirit prompted me to share this particular verse. Chuck's death, especially the fact that he chose to give up what we think would have been a good life, had a profound impact on my blasé atti-tude about life and its mysteriousness and its urgency – and its preciousness!

I tried to explain to these bewildered gifts–suddenly I saw my treasured sons in a new light!–that God knows the right time and place for us to be born, and He wants us to make use of our talents and our strength right where we are and at that time. He doesn't want us dreaming of other times and places and what we could have done there. It's senseless, useless and hopeless.

These dear young men have gone on to caring and giving lives. They have happy marriages to wonderful gals, and now we will be grandparents. Life, that dear gift, goes on. How I thank God for our sons and daughters who choose to live and love and pass on these great gifts so others may live!

...we are born neither too soon nor too late; that we are born at this time because God has purposes for us and no one else.
