One reason it is important to understand Aquarius characteristics has to do with the fact that these represent humanity's direction for the next 2,000 years. Those who "tune in" to Aquarius vibrations will fit into, and "ride the wave" into the future. On the other hand, those who cling on to the patterns and teachings of the Pisces era will have things increasingly "work against them", if not destroyed altogether.
One major misconception about Aquarius has to do with the figure chosen to represent it: "the water carrier". Because this figure is strongly associated with water (and the fact that many constellations surrounding Aquarius represent water as well, such as Pisces, Capricorn the "Seagoat", the southern Fish, and the Dolphin) many first think that Aquarius is a water sign also. Aquarius, of course, is not a water sign (Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces are the three water signs), but instead belongs to the group of air signs (which include Libra and Gemini).
Why is it then, that an AIR sign has come to be called the 'WATER carrier"? Was this a mistake, or misunderstanding due to the passing down of knowledge over thousands of years? Actually, the ancients combined the elements of water and air into the symbolism of Aquarius on purpose, for it was their attempt to describe a "new" and special energy the science of their time could not explain.
The "type" of water Aquarius is "carrying" is very much like the "water" the tarot card TEMPERANCE is pouring from one cup to another. If you look closely at this card, you will see that the "movement" of this "water" is very unusual. As the angle pours the raised cup with her left hand, the substance does fall to the ground (as any water or other liquid naturally would in such a position). Instead, this "water" seems to magically "flow" into the other cup, as if to defy gravity.
The only element known in ancient times that could defy gravity was air, which is why the element of Aquarius came to be that of air. This "air" was combined with water, since this strange substance also moved with the same properties as water. The ancients did not have a full understanding of this substance - but we do today. One substance that defies gravity like air, yet flows with the consistency of water is: electricity.
Aquarius: The electronic age
We do know the ancients had some practical working knowledge of electricity, for certain pottery discovered dating back to 250 BC are believed to be the first known cell batteries. These 'water jugs' had special carbon rods which extended into the jar and outside as well. It might be interesting to note that in ancient times, electricity was 'carried' about in the same way as water...!
About the same time in history as the discovery of the planet Uranus (the planet that represents Aquarius and electricity), one of the founding fathers of America, Benjamin Franklin, became one of the first humans in modern times to "capture" and study electricity. He did this by flying a kite out into a lightning storm. The string and some components of the kite were made of metal, which were attached to a metal key. When the lightning hit the kite, the key began to glow, and the door to the electronic age was then opened.
Since this time we have seen the use of electricity grow steadily, and every indication is that it will continue to do so. The current use of electricity - and its projected uses in the future - is also far exceeding its original application of powering certain machines and providing the energy for lights. Electricity and electronic impulses are now an important part of communications (telephones, TV, and computer "mail"), as well as banking, design, business, medicine, production, and many, many other fields as well.
Electricity and electronics then, will be a major element, force, and energy that our lives "vibrate to" in the Aquarian age. Next week, we will look at how this 'energy' will affect the human condition, as well as other characteristics that can be found in the coming NEW AGE...
Electronic humanity
Over the last 100 years our use of electricity has increased in astonishing proportions. At first electricity was only used to power the machines of the Industrial Revolution, but now it is used in nearly every aspect of our lives. We are (to put it mildly) completely surrounded and dependent on electricity - and the indications are this tendency will continue to increase in to the next age as well. In fact, the electronic energy fields from the very devices humans have created are slowly changing humanity itself!
Studies done on the affects of people who live near large electrical fields (such as power plants and cables) show some disturbing results. Human beings have several parts of their bodies which are electronic in nature as well, such as the synapses in our nervous system. These parts of our body are then affected when they come near strong mechanical electronic fields.
When humans relaxes, sleeps, or changes moods, this VARIES the pattern of the electrical fields that surround us. (You might say we flash on and off like a flickering light bulb that is weakening.....) This does not happen with machines, for once they are turned on, they vibrate with a CONSTANT electronic field. This means that there are times when our electronic fields vibrate more "in tune" with that of the machines around you than with your own natural rhythms! (This is especially so if these items are with large magnets, such as stereo speakers). Which device produces one of the strongest electrical fields for its size and weight? Your television set!
