Welcome to Discovering South
Carolina, From the Mountains to the Sea. Everything that you will find
on this web site was researched or created by a group of Sumter School
District #17 educators. Our group consists of five members: Debra Weston,
keyboarding teacher at Alice Drive Middle School, Cathy Weathers, 2nd grade
teacher at Kingsbury Elementary School, Susan Rigg, 4th grade teacher at
Wilder Elementary School, Carolyn Putnam, media specialist at Millwood
Elementary School, and Cynthia Parker, 6th grade mathemathics and social
studies teacher at Alice Drive Middle School. Our aim was to develop a
high interest project integrating technology into the curriculum, keeping
the state curriculum standards in mind, as well as current research and
educational practices, with a unit of instruction that meets the needs
of teachers and students in our schools, district, and state. If you have
any ideas or suggestions for expanding or improving this site, please feel
free to get in touch with us.
With its more than 300 years of
history, our state is rich in history, industry, cultural diversity, natural
resources, tourist attractions, breath-taking scenery, and so much, much
more, that we were all in agreement that we wanted to share our interest
in and love of South Carolina with others. The history of South Carolina
is taught in the 3rd and 8th grades in our state. This web site was created
as a starting place for teachers and students studying Palmetto State history,
as well as for anyone else interested in the South Carolina. A simple click
of the mouse will allow teachers and students to make a virtual visit,
via the Internet, to many different locations within South Carolina. From
this web site, developed by educators for educators and their students,
you will discover South Carolina from the mountains to the sea.
