Objective, Purpose and Audience

This project is designed to give educators an idea of technology standards for three school districts in North Texas: Mesquite ISD, Richardson ISD, and Sherman ISD. It is hoped that this information will encourage educators to think about their own technology skills, and the skills they may need in the future.


Introduction

This issue of teacher technology standards and competencies appears to be in its relative infancy. Although the business world has been using this technology for some time, many schools are only just now gaining access. Exactly what do teachers need to know about technology?

The first place to start when answering this question is with the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills). Texas has defined technology skills required for students in each grade level. It only follows that the teacher must have, at minimum, those skills as well. These skills are further addressed in Texas Education Agency's Long Range Plan for Technology.

Our team has researched three north Texas school districts to see what they have in place concerning teacher technology standards and competencies. We also looked into how each district proposed to assess their teachers' knowledge of technology. The districts studied were:
