The ceiling of the tunnel is getting lower and lower as Sharon looks back to see if I'm still behind her. The camera flash illuminates hundreds of small pick marks (white spots) in the walls and ceiling of the tunnel. Except for the flash for the photos, the total darkness of the tunnel was pierced only by the light from our small flashlights.
At the point where the ceiling is the lowest (about 4 feet 9 inches), the combination of low ceiling and high water level makes it somewhat difficult to proceed. When I went through this point my face was in the water (I'm 6' 3" tall). The tunnel is not the ideal place to be if you are claustrophobic.
Sharon looks up as the ceiling of the
tunnel rises. The Siloam Inscription
was found near this spot.
Three Palestinian boys help us celebrate completing our passage through the tunnel and into the Pool of Siloam. We had been in the tunnel about 45 minutes.
This last view looks down into what
remains of the Pool of Siloam.
