Rebecca (1940)

Think quick! Name all of the movies that won Alfred Hitchcock Academy awards for Best Picture...nope, not that one. Not that one either. Give up? Mr. Hitchcock won only one Best Picture Academy Award and it was for his first American movie called Rebecca, and there is a reason that Rebecca won this prestigious award. It is simply an excellent all-around movie.

Rebecca is a movie for all tastes. Do you like suspense? Rebecca has it as only Hitchcock can do it. How about mystery? Once again, a trait displayed in Rebecca. Well, how about romance? Rebecca is a beautiful and passionate love story also!

In a nutshell, Rebecca is about a shy, poor young woman (played by Joan Fontaine) who marries the incredibly wealthy Maxim de Winter (Luarence Olivier). The only problem is that Maxim is haunted by the passing of his former wife, Rebecca. This makes it difficult for the new Mrs. de Winter. You see, Rebecca had it all; beauty, power, confidence, and was adored by everyone. This is so tough for the new bride that she becomes haunted and can feel Rebecca's presence everywhere. The mysterious housekeeper Mrs. Danforth (Judith Anderson) doesn't make anything easier for her either. Then the plot takes a true Hitchcockian twist halfway through....I will leave the rest for you to see. I would hate to ruin it!

If you have seen many Hitchcock movies, you may predict what will happen, but if this will be your first Hitchcock viewing you will be shocked. This was my first Hitchcock film and I have been hooked ever since. Everyone must see this one. I will leave you now with the famous words of Joan Fontaine..."We can never go back to Manderly again"...but we can!
