WHAT IS CIARU?

It is the Rock Art Research Center of Uruguay (Centro de Investigación de Arte Rupestre del Uruguay), a non governmental organization (NGO) having legal capacity since 1985 and whose objectives are to preserve and to make known the prehistoric national rock art. It is a civil association, acting as a cientific society with non profitable aims, that has carried investigation work since 1972 in our country.

CIARU is recognized at international level because it is founder and part of the International federation of Rock Art Organizations (IFRAO) with head office in Australia. It is also part of the International committee for Rock Art (Comitte International pour l'Art Rupestre). Due to its recognition, its members have been invited to participate and to colaborate with different investigations in several countries of South and Central America, and Africa.

EDUCATION AND DIFFUSION

CIARU has carried out several sensitization campaigns for the loss of prehistoric art through conferences on almost all capital cities of our country, the printing of brochures and the making of an exhibition at the town hall of Montevideo in 1996 that gathered more than ten thousand persons.
