Special HTML encoding There are systems to encode text in HTML, so different scripts can be used and viewed. For Russian, for instance, there is the extended KOI-8 standard in Internet. But we would need to have KOI-8 fonts installed to work that way, and you, the visitors, would have to install also KOI-8 to view our pages and names correctly. And that only for Russian, for other languages other standards should be used... At the same time, you could not read simultaneously latin text... Therefore, we opt for transliterations.

If you use software that enables you to view Internet in KOI-8 you would see the Ukranian names in Column 1 the way they are in Col. 2. The rest would be incoherent text.

Transliterazioak Beraz, idazkera ez Latinoentzat, transliteratzea da konponbidea. Honek esan nahi du karaktere bitxiak beren baliokide Latinoetara moldatzea (ikus Ukrainako izenen adibidea goian). GeoNativen nazioarteko estandarretan oinarritutako transliterazioak erabiltzen ditu. Transliterations For alphabets and scripts other than Latin, transliterating is the solution. This means rendering the strange characters into Latin equivalents (see Ukrainian example above). GeoNative uses transliterations schemes based in international standards. In some of those schemes, diacritic signs are used, as in: We display those using our own ASR system, in this case writing Uz<horod. Properly speaking, in GeoNative we use some transliteration schemes (transliterating character by character) and some transcription schemes: for example, the Cyrillic characters K" in some languages equal Q.

ASR In the Latin alphabet itself (and in transliterations into Latin), quite a lot of special characters and diacritic signs are used. HTML lets use view some of them, but not others.
