The New Writers' Network is the best guide to being published on the Internet. All of the addresses below are open to submissions of manuscripts by new writers, though some more so than others. Look out for the thumbs up award to indicate agents which, in our opinion, are particularly open to new writing and would like to consider your work. Conversly, the thumbs down award indicates the opposite.
The AM sometimes refered to regards Ambrosia, my last novel. It indicates which agents were willing to view the project and so is a guide to their willingness to take new authors. Of course many agents mentioned here may have declined it due to being fully committed, or perhaps it weas the wrong genre or various other reasons. If the directory states Name on Letter then this indicates a name on a letter that differs from the stated company head name, though it's generally best to still address projects to the director if the name is available. Most businesses don't mind if you phone to check first.
The New Writers' Guide is a young site and the rating scheme shall vastly improve when all you writers out there contribute your experiences of the various agents by filling out the Update/Referral form.

Note: I think this new address replaces the old one, which was -
213 Linen Hall,
162 - 168 Regent Street,
London W1R 5TA,
England.
UPDATE: The address is the Cambridge Road one, for sure.
I remember this agent looked at the very first work about four
years ago,
and gave some advice about presentation.
Since then they've viewed everything except one project,
so very open to new ideas.
AM = Yes, viewed synopsis, then rejected.
UPDATE
Some negative feedback concerning JM Thurley has been received from a writer. I include the essense below. I haven't personally had dealings with the company for a few years, but funnily enough submitted a new proposal within the last month, so I'll update again when I get their reply. Let us know if you have any experience of this company, be it good or bad.
Big on initial approach... encouragement to sent in, Synopsis & 3
Opening Chapters.
Took forever to respond however and then only to try and push inhouse editing
services.
Once their offer was rejected, they lost interest, never returned 50 odd pages
plus synopsis and never even apologised for loosing said pages... needless to
say cost of included postage in the form of International return Coupons (from
overseas) was never... yes you guessed it returned.
Not looking good on this company. The following negative report received from a UK writer in June 2003
Hi
I put in a search for the above [JM Thurley] after being rejected from this agency (found your site instead). [They] surprise, surprise, wanted to rope me in on an editorial service. My novel has been proffessionally edited and critiqued and I found whoever I spoke to on the phone at Thurley's 'new address' which is now in Deal, to be quite vague and unhelpful. Also I too sent in at least fifty pages worth (3 chapters) with return postage which hasn't been returned. Again when I mentioned this to 'him' he was vague and only remotely apologetic about the blunder.
I sympathise with the author who experienced this also with them. A lot of time, effort and money goes into presenting them with the goods and it is extremely annoying when our work goes 'missing.' I have experienced this with a number of agencies but they just don't seem to care.
I have been turned down by around 40 now and am wondering if there really is a decent company out there to offer some real advice instead of getting us to buy their books, ect.
From a frustrated author, feel free to get back to me and post this info on your site.
All the best
Sally.

Another confirmation they push an editing service, received July 2003
Responded quickly to my submission with some general comments but like the previous feedback you've received, proceeded to push their editing service.
Update -- JM Thurley respond to the writer's comments on this site.
Your website features us rather prominently, in an adverse light. This
came as a surprise as we regularly receive letters and e-mails thanking us
for taking the trouble to read submissions and to offer constructive
criticism. A few facts about literary agents in general might afford subscribers an insight into what happens on the other side of the table and help to modify some apparently rather naive assumptions that appear to be extant.
Literary agents receive anything up to 200 unsolicited submissions per
week by mail and e-mail. Unlike dentists, plumbers, electricians,
solicitors, or accountants most don't charge for responding to such work. In other words they are asked - and accept - a situation in which they are providing a free
service to complete strangers: a situation unique in a world where the
cash nexus
regulates all other dealings. Some agents use the standard rejection
letter as
the most efficient way of dealing with the tide of submissions: this has
the
merit of being relatively fast, but provides the writer with no insight
into
what they are doing wrong - or right...

Update
After legal action from The Alta Vista search engine the company was renamed Litopea. They prefer initial submission as a brief, one page synopsis, by e-mail. The web site at
www.litopea.com looks professional and has sample submissions you may want to look at first.
AM = Recently submitted.
UPDATE Same address, new numbers:
Tel: 020 7224 1748
Fax: 020 7224 1802
E-mail: enquiries@litopea.com
The submission procedure has now changed. There are two, a standard one for three which takes three months and gives circulars as rejections, and a paid one, for cash, where they read, reject and give advice for a fee. Yet agents generally make money by selling authors work, not commenting on it. Writers don't give money to publishers or agents, it's the other way around. Not recommended.

UPDATE: I used to publish their e-mail and postal address, and they contacted me asking it all be removed, "for reasons of security". This is a tad strange as I used to have a PO Box address, it's just so all your mail goes in one place, the post office doesn't keep the addresses confidential. Anyway, perhaps you'd better take the hint and contact them via the PO Box, if that's what they prefer.

Complaint received from a writer that this company asked to see a manuscript with a list of who else was considering the work, then flatly refused to consider it as the requested list was too long, despite the fact that it hadn't been rejected at all as yet.
Thanks for all the e-mails. Keep them coming. Here are the new UK agents, an ever growing list.
They offer a service to paste your work on their
website for thirty five pounds for 6 months (fifty for
12) but it has to be no more than 1000 words (200
outline and 800 sample writing) which I found
unsatisfactory. I went ahead with it for 6 months but
it hasn't produced any results although my work is
still on, long after the 6 months has elapsed. Glad I
didn't go for the 12 month option.
Partners: Georgina Coombs and Lisa
