Symbolized by the giant silver "golf ball" (Spaceship Earth), Epcot was the second major theme park to open in the Walt Disney World Resort. It evolved from Walt Disney's idea to build the city of the future, the Experimental Prototype Community Of Tomorrow (Nicknamed: You guessed it, E.P.C.O.T.) You see, Walt was disappointed with Disneyland, his first park in California, because they hadn't bought the land surrounding the park, and the area had turned into, in Walt's own words, "A second-rate Las Vegas". His idea for Walt Disney World was to build Magic Kingdom, then have E.P.C.O.T. surround it, with all of it's buisnesses and homes. After Walt's death, the idea was adapted to become the theme park that opened on October 1st, 1982.
Trivia:
A year or so back, part of Walt's dream came true. A Disney-owned community opened in Florida, not too far from Orlando, called Celebration. There are neighborhoods where people live, and there is even a Disney-owned school in the city. The town is themed to look like a community of the 1940's.
