Auburn's History
It began after the gold rush; the city was created to be the home of the rich and the begging ground of the poor. For a short time, the city grew. Then, came the depression. The depression nearly wiped the city from the face of the map. The only reason that Auburn wasn't completely abandoned was its lucrative drug trade. The bulk of the populace didn't recognize this business, naturally, but those who took place in it grew to be filthy rich. Ever since even the elders have been in this city, this drug trade has been taking place. Now, of course, it is mostly the Kindred who run the operations, but mortals do still serve as efficient grunts. Around 1895 a Toreador came upon the town. Its quaint atmosphere captivated him. He immediately sent word to his associates, and more than mortals soon populated the city. The two main powers in the city were the Toreador and the Ventrue; the Toreador as the renovators and the Ventrue as the owners. The Ventrue fed money to the Toreador, which the Toreador used to restore Auburn to the state of a pristine mining town. This went on, slowly, for 50 years. The Ventrue leaked ever-increasing amounts of currency into the economy; the Toreador spent this money on "public services". Somewhere along the progression, though, problems occurred. The Toreador came under the impression that their funds were unlimited, while the Ventrue saw Auburn as a financial drain. In a horrible twist of fate, the Toreador went over their budget by millions in the same financial quarter that the Ventrue were planning on halting their funding. The city's delicate, artificial economy was ruined. All of the elder Kindred fled, be it from disgust at their peers or for personal reasons. For a while the city was free of any noticeable Kindred presence, and the populace slowly began to right their economy.
Today one Kindred from the truly old Auburn has come back. He is interested in the reconstruction of the Camarilla in this shell of a city. As he did return, a slow trickle of Kindred have returned as well. This trickle grows daily, though, for the Kindred population is growing. Despite the Kindred's disinterest in the city over the past half-century, other occult creatures have not been so quiet in their activities. Around the general area there are Garaou, as well as other mystical creatures. The Kindred came into confrontation with a group of Fae on their first night back in the city, there is even a small population of the awakened/enlightened. Interesting times indeed.
