The Golden Woods
        TREITHI FALLS

You make your way out of the closed golden path, filigreed leaves cruching and shifting underfoot, into a place so filled with sound that you think you may have gone deaf. Shielding your ears hastily, you cast your eyes forward, desperately searching for the monstrous sound, and finding it in the form of a huge waterfall straight ahead of you. You stumble forward to the edge of a cliff spilling over with golden moss and grasses, and look downward before your fear can get the best of you...

        It goes on forever.

Below you is a bottomless pit, a chasm of rock heding straight downward into oblivion. The water falls from the much higher oppositie side of the chasm, and as your ears become used to its roar, you cannot heard the sound of smashing water on water that would tell you the falls ever end somewhere below. You marvel at this reality of a bottomless pit and at the beauty of the crystal waters...until suddenly something is behind you! You feel it more than see or hear it, and whirl around wide-eyed...

Not having a clue what to expect, you are startled nearly off of your feet when you turn to see a small black furball sitting not ten feet from you and watching you intently. It's eyes glow and eerue color and its wolf-like form is sleek, if still slightly rounded with youth. You can tell that it is nothing but a pup, and wander where its mother and pack are. The little one seems to be stoic in its silence, and you think perhaps its yoputhful appearance is deceiving and in fact it is fully capable of taking care of itself. Then you see another form moving out of the trees. The little wolf-creature darts toward it at lightning speed, remaning behind this new equine and nuzzling it in such a way that you can tell this new creature is the caretaker you were looking for....

The equine stares at you, its grey-purple fur shining in the sun streaming in from above, and then it speaks. "Hile, good travelor. I am Tasjex'Morint, or Bubble Surprise, a Moriandor Pony gift from Myrror and the caretaker of the creatures here, including this little guy. You must excuse this little one, for he cannot help but be afraid of humans. Little Myirne, or Comet, is a T'reithi, a wolf-like creature of the Savine Dream, brought here only recently to live with the Mistress Azrielen after she journeyed to his home Tcher, or Pack, to request a fosterling. That is another reason for his shyness." You ask why the creature being a T'reithi would make him afraid of humans, all curiosity, and the greyish equine readily begins a small T'reithi history lesson.

"You see, stranger, the T'Reithi were messengers once for the humans in the Dream. One time, a great warm broke out, called the War of the Four WInds, and the T'reithi refused to choose sides, remaining as messengers for all sides of the conflict. Well, the humans saw them as traitors and slaughtered them by the hundreds. Entire packs were wiped out, and from then on, not one T'reithi has been able to fully trust a human. That is why I was sent to raise little Myirne, so that Azrielen did not scare the karekere, or kit, senseless while trying to care for it! Karekere are born only in small groups with a very high probability for major mutations, both genetic and caused by the odd fluctuations of the Dream around their homelands. A few even have such awful mutations that they are stillborn, but this little guy is healthy as can be..." The grey mare smiles and is about to continue when a duet of high-pitched squeaking issues from a nearby tree.

Tasjex' rolls her eyes and sighs, yelling for the two little creature to pipe down. "I apparently forgot to mention that thise two annoying flitterbrains up there are also helping raise little Myirne. The one on the left is Leknera, a Flight of Fancy given as another present to Az from the Lady Myrror. The other little thing to the right is Chacba, a Butterflea given as a gift from Lexington. They are both impossible and thickheaded." Tasjex' goes back to ignoring the two tiny equines...

Satisfied with your knowldge of the dark T'reithi still nestled agains Tasjex', you now turn to asking of this place in which you stand, and of the huge, overpowering waterfall the flows downward not yards from where you stand. Tasjex' tells the history of this place with a skill and easy that speaks of many other visitors to this place asking the same question in the past. "The waterfall you see before you is Prism falls. The water itself is said to flow from a huge natural spring at the very tip of Thorn Mountain above. The hot water for the springs wells up from the bowels of the mountains and creates huge billows of steam when the heated waters contact with the cold peak air, sometimes making the mountain seem a steaming volcano! We are not so perfectly sure of all of this, for no one that has ever gone to the Peak has returned, but no trace of their bodies are ever either, and so it is all a mystery. Someday an expedition will be mounted and maybe those secrets uncovered at last, but until then...." she drifts off mysteriously before continuing. "The waters that flow from the Peak are said to be the purest in all the world, and anyone who drinks of them can tell no truthes." You ask how, if the water is so pure, it could make people lie, and Tasjex' just replies, beginning to sniff warily at the air, "Don't ak me. I only work here!" She laughs heartily before becoming suddenly silent and watchful. Not even the air trembles....

Suddenly, a scrabbling sound can be heard in the bushes and all heads, including yours, turn toward it. It sounds like a bit of clucking, and as soon as it is distinguishable, the two small ponies take off. Tasjex' turns worried eyes toward you. "You must go now, wanderer. The Chocobos run wild here and some of them are rather..." she swallows hard "...carnivorous." She gives you a push and stalks off with Myirne in tow, diving into the bushes in an attempt to flush out whatever awaits. When she does not emmerge for several moments, you begin to worry. But then youe here Tasjex's voice slightly farther off and are reassured that all is alright with the world....
