Chapter 2: Link begins his journey
Link and Mido run towards the Deku tree.
Link: Great Deku Tree! What happened? Answer me!!
Link starts hitting the side of the Deku tree. Mido comments that it's cold, and wonders if the Deku tree is dead..
Saria arrives, and so do the rest of the Kokiri.
Suddenly, where Link has been hitting the Deku tree, a huge eye appears. Gohma crawls out of the tree, and Link stumbles backwards.
Navi: That's the one! That's the one that has cursed the Deku Tree!
Gohma crawls back inside the Deku tree, saying "Stone... Give me the stone... Where is the stone..."
An entrance appears below the Deku tree's face, and Link stands in front of it, looking inside. (Mido and his two friends stay well back, looking scared.)
Suddenly, Link takes out his slingshot, and runs into the entrance.
Link: I'll save him!
Saria: Link!
Mido: Wait, I'm going too! (holding up the Kokiri sword) This is the Kokiri's sword, passed down from the forest! (um, that bit's a little hard to translate.)
Link and Mido are walking through the dark interior of the Deku Tree, with their fairies flying around and giving them some light.
Link: Hey, Mido, don't try to outdo yourself.
Mido: This is the only way I can look good to Saria!
Link: What do you mean?
Mido: Saria's always only looking at you!
Then, Mido stumbles into a big spiderweb..
Mido: Hey, what's this sticky stuff? Let me go!
Meanwhile, Navi notices a strange noise. She flies over to its source, revealing Gohma, who is still muttering "the stone.. where is the stone..."
Link suddenly realises...
Link: That thing.. is eating the Deku Tree!!
(see Gohma crunching up bits of bark and wood)
Gohma turns and looms over Link and Mido.
Gohma: You.. I'll curse you, too!
Link starts shooting at Gohma with his slingshot, but all the seeds he fires ricochet of Gohma's armored body.
Link: Put the Deku Tree back how it was!!
Gohma: Give me the stone.. where is the stone...
Link gives up on the slingshot and retreats, wondering 'what is this "stone," anyway?!'
Meanwhile, Mido stands frozen in place, holding the Kokiri sword.
Navi: Link, Mido!
Link dives and knocks Mido just out of the way as Gohma swipes at him with a claw.
Link tell sMido off for doing something so dangerous, and Mido tells him to stop meddling.
A rock falls on Link's head, and Gohma comes towards them again. Link stumbles backwards into a big patch of web.
Link: ..I can't move!!
Gohma advances towards him, and Link realises he only has one Deku Seed left.
A rock bounces off Gohma's back, distracting her.
Mido: Stupid, Link.. even I can..
Mido throws more rocks at Gohma, and she starts to turn around. A stone narrowly misses Navi.
Navi: Hey, where are you throwing that?!
The stone hits Gohma in the eye, and she's momentarily stunned.
Navi: !! Link, Gohma's weakness is her eye! Go for the eye!!
Link takes aim with his last Deku Seed, and just as Gohma it about to grab him with one of her huge pincer-claws, he shoots, hitting her right in the eye.
Gohma sizzles and shrinks into a tiny bug, as Mido and Link look on, astonished.
Link: That's.. Gohma?
Mido: That's a tiny little bug!
Link and Mido rush out of the Deku Tree, panting and grinning.
"Great Deku Tree, Great Deku Tree.. we've beaten Gohma!"
Deku Tree: Together, you two were strong enough to remove the curse.. well done Link, and Mido.
(Link is smiling, and Mido is ecstatic, posing with the Kokiri sword held high.)
Deku Tree: ..but, my health will not return.
Link is devastated.
Link: Why?! Deku Tree, don't die!! I fought my hardest.. it's not fair!
Deku Tree: Link.. listen well. While Gohma was eating, I learned of some information.. about the curse that was put on me. The one who is manipulating this scary wickedness is.. the King of the Desert. He is secretly planning to take the Triforce that rules Hyrule for himself.
Link: Triforce..?
The Deku Tree explains that it is the Triforce that was used to create the earth. If an evil person touches it, then the world will be ruled by evil, and a dark time will come over Hyrule. He tells Link to be courageous, and stop this evil person from realising his ambitions.
Link: but.. why me? I can't do these scary things.. and I can't fight..
Deku Tree: You can do it! Link, you know that the world outside is big and wide.
The Deku Tree tells Link to go to Hyrule castle.
Deku Tree: And this is the Kokiri's Emerald, the reason for which that evil man put a curse on me.
(he actually calls it a Jade, not an Emerald, but I'll call it an Emerald, like it is in English.)
As the other Kokiri look on, Link receives the stone.
Deku Tree: Good luck, Link.. I'm counting on you.
Link: Yes. I understand, Great Deku Tree.
Deku Tree: Make a shield out of my bark.. it will protect you from all that is evil.
Navi: Great Deku Tree...
Deku Tree: Navi.. look after Link.... good luck. Everyone... I'll see you.. again..
Link: Great Deku Tree!!!
Link and the other Kokiri stand around the dying Deku Tree, with tears in their eyes.
Link: Mido, show me how to use that sword.
Link takes the Kokiri sword from Mido, and uses it to carve a shield out of a piece of the Deku tree's wood.
Mido: Where are you going to go? You know that we Kokiri can't leave the forest.
Link smiles.
Link: I want to try to see the outside world. I want to see how big it is, and what things are in it, with my own eyes. I'll come back, once I have collected the Spiritual Stones.
Mido looks upset that Link is leaving.
Mido: ..take the sword! (shoving it into Link's hand)
Link looks like he's about to cry.. he puts his head down and runs out of the forest before he actually does cry.
Mido yells after him: Come back again!!
Link runs across the bridge that leaves the Lost Woods, not noticing that Saria is standing there, until she asks if he's going away.
Link turns around.
Link: S.. Saria.
Saria looks sad.
Link: I always thought.. that it was possible that I'm different from everyone else.
Saria: ....
Link: But, the forest is still my home.
Saria smiles. She hands Link her Ocarina.
Saria: Take this Ocarina.. play it sometimes, to remind you of the forest, after you've gone.
Link runs out onto Hyrule field, into the outside world. High above him on a tree branch, Kaepora Gaebora watches him.
Kaepora Gaebora (to himself): Hoo.. the time for this child to begin his jounrey has come. The fate of the world of Hyrul has been entrusted to this young boy.. I wonder what will happen? On the Deku Tree's behalf, I will watch over him..
