Tom Wilkes was already an in-demand artist having designed art for dozens of album covers when he was tapped to serve as the art director for 1967's Monterey International Pop Festival. Three years later Reprise records selected his famous Monterey Festival poster as part of the design for the cover of a split album featuring two of the biggest and best performances at the show - Otis Redding and The Jimi Hendrix Experience. The design certainly looks staid by today's standards, but early 1970s sensitivities being what they were, Reprise found itself under attack for the then-risqué cover art and quickly decided the smart marketing move was to replace the offending cover with a comparatively bland series of color photos taken during the show. (Killer album by the way.)
