Bushpilot's Special Floatplane Site

on location: Lake Hood, Alaska

Welcome to my Floatplane Gallery! Here, I have a collection of graphics that I shot on location at Lake Hood, Alaska. This lake-based seaplane port is home to many operators that fly to all parts of SouthCentral and Western Alaska. With over 150,000 movements per year, it's easily the busiest seaplane base in the world.

Lake Hood is home to hundreds of seaplanes. You can find just about every seaplane made here. Here is a DeHaviland Beaver on short final. The Beaver is another workhorse in Alaskan Aviation. This bushplane has proved itself over and over, and is probably the most durable bushplane made.

Here is a couple Cessna C-206 seaplanes on final to Lake Hood

Here is pictured a Super Cub on the right, and a Ketchum Air Service Beaver step-taxiing to the end of Lake Hood. Step taxiing involves operating at high speed, nearly takeoff speed, to reduce taxi time. At this high speed, however, the aircraft must be controlled as if in takeoff, because the wings are generating a lot of lift.
