Red Bird Special Use Recreational Area
2/22/89

Last Sunday (2/15/98) Troy and I got a chance to do some
trail riding down in south-west Indiana. The area is locally
refered to as Red Bird. The Special Use OHV park will
eventually cover about fifteen hundred acres. The Northern
section will be dedicated to Fish and Wildlife preserve for
use as a fish and wildlife area with the possiblity of
ATV/4x4 access for disabled hunters. With a little luck and
hard work it will soon be open to the public thanks to the
hard work of the D.I.R.T. (Discover Indiana's Riding Trails),
Midwest Trail Runners 4x4 Club and United Four Wheel Drive
Assosiation. They've been working along with the Indiana
Department of Natural Resources for the last 7 or 8 years in
an effort to create a new recreational area for the off-road
enthusiast to fullfill the requirements set forth by the
Indiana Trails 2000.

D.I.R.T is a coalition of clubs that represent all forms of
motorized use in Indiana. The Mid-West Trail Runners is a
club that specializes in Short wheelbase and some long
wheelbase vehicles. Discover Indiana's Riding Trails in
conjunction with the Department of Natural Resources are
responsible for getting this project underway. All of these
organizations are working together to help maintain a trail
structure that has been in place for over 30 years and are
also in the process of establishing guidelines so everyone
can enjoy Red Bird. Red Bird consists of wooded, hilly
terrain with lots of small creeks and plenty of mud. We had
a great time while we were there, the trails were challenging
and the folks that invited us down treated us like royalty.
We really appreceated the professional and courtious manner
with which the club conducted themselves on the trail. I
especially like the fact that all the vehicles were well
built, practical and quiet.

After spending about five hours on the trail, we aired up and
met at the local pizza place to talk about the day, tell lies
and officially incorperate the club. Since Troy and I had a
five hour drive ahead of us, we bid our farewells a little
early and headed out with a lot of good memories. On the way
home we were already making plans to head back down there.

Red Bird is located south of Terre Haute about 45 minutes
near the town of Dugger, Indiana.

limited slip rear, 2.5" lift, Warn 9000 winch, Super Swampers
and a smooth running 258 straight six.

Troy (I hate my carb) Jerrel crawls up a hill in his white 258 powered '80 CJ-7 with a
2" lift and 32" Coursers that pulled him over and through anything.
