I decided to feature something different today. In trying to preserve our Kapampangan
culture, we have to attract today's Kapampangan in a language that is familiar to all.
And one of these media is the celphone.
No one can discount the fact that the celphone is a very powerful channel of
communication here in the Philippines. It has even toppled a government, as texting
has been credited for starting EDSA II. Here in Pampanga, it is said that it is only in
text messages that Kapampangans still write in Kapampangan. This is a sad fact, but it
is a fact that no cultural advocate should take for granted. In fact, we can start a
cultural revival using the celphone, as it could be used as a means for popularizing
again the Kapampangan culture.
So here is my own contribution: K-ringtones! Below are some ringtones, popular
Kapampangan folk songs, which I arranged for Nokia celphones during my freetime at
the Center for Kapampangan Studies. Some of them I had to compose by ear. But I was
happy to see a 1983 textbook of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports (MECS)
Region III at the Center entitled "Folk Songs of Central Luzon," which was indeed a
treasure. I hope that the DECS Region III office would reprint this book and popularize
these songs again in the classroom.
