3dfx Voodoo Banshee Drivers for Win9x/Me/2k/XP

These sets work fine with DirectX 8.1 and DirectX 9 but the Banshee hardware feature set is fully exposed by DirectX 7, so don't expect miracles with modern games, especially those requiring multi-texturing, vertex shaders & pixel shaders... The most requested driver sets are now mirrored at Guru3D. Click on the icon of your choice to download.

Downloads - Win9x/ME - (May 2001)

This installation has been re-written for WinME and is based on the Banshee DirectX7 v1.04.00 reference core with updated OpenGL/Glide & 3dfxTools v2.6.2.116. It contains all of the features of the previous sets and includes the new HSR and Guardband Clipping options. I have disabled the Features tab as it duplicates existing functionality in the Advanced Features tab. Install via the 3dfx installer as per instructions in readme.txt.

Downloads - Win9x - (September 2000)

This driver set is based on the v1.03.04 reference core and works fine with Win9x/ME. I have made it available due to the many requests. It includes 3dfxTools v1.5.7.77 from the earlier Voodoo 3 driver sets & is particularly useful if you want to play Black & White. Update: Lionhead have released a patch for B&W which addresses issues with the Banshee. I have not tested the patch, but it fixes performance issues with the latest driver.

Downloads - Win2k - (May 2001)

These sets are based on the most recent v1.02.02b Win2k reference drivers. I have posted these due to the large number of requests. The D3D portion of this driver isn't particularly robust. The latest OpenGL ICD & Glide libs have been included & perform well. The 3dfxTools control panels have not been included because they are not supported correctly by the miniport. Use the 3dfx installer for easy installation. The old Banshee control panels have been incorporated into the 10202d archive but tend to have a memory leak... I recommend the newer version without control panels. Please read the readme.txt file.

Downloads - WinXP - (February 2003) - Updated

The earlier WinXP sets have been removed. This driver set includes the Open Source Glide libs from the 3dfx Glide3 SDK compiled by Colourless for WinXP. The GlideXP Project page contains further info as well as source code. These Glide libs trap the problems with WinOpen/WinOpenExt under WinXP and address numerous other OpenGL/Glide issues. The current build is 1015 which is quite stable with OpenGL ICD x.0761 dated Jan 16 2001. This release also includes an ICD interceptor enabling patching of OpenGL calls. Future builds can be copied directly into the \windows\system32 dir. Comments & questions are welcome.

Additional Driver Sets

Diamond Monster Fusion
Creative 3D Blaster Banshee
Skywell Magic TwinPower

OpenGL/Glide Drivers

These are up for historical purposes and are intended for those wishing to experiment. These ARE NOT required if you have downloaded any of the above driver sets. Note: WinXP users should not use these files as they will lead to BSODs... Alternative Glide libs are provided by Colourless or Koolsmoky. You can grab their latest builds if required.

Note: The OpenGL ICD x.0661 and Glide x.0656 libs are in the September 2000 sets which work well. You must use ICD x.0761 (2 versions) with corresponding the x.0658 or x.0674 glide libs. These libs allow HSR and Guardband Clipping with OpenGL and Glide games. HSR is really a hack that the 3dfx driver team employed to obtain higher Q3A scores... You don't really render more fps due to this implementation of "occlusion detection"... I recommend HSR=2 & GBC=on so that screen flashing/tearing is kept to a minimum.

3dfx MiniGL Driver

3dfx MiniGL driver v1.49 for Voodoo Banshee, Voodoo 3/4/5. This is a subset of the ICD, which is tuned for Quake2 based games. Read the Readme.txt file for more info. Minigl.zip (58KB)

Overlay Gamma Patch

The Overlay control in the Color tab doesn't work for the Banshee. However, it is possible to independently change the overlay gamma via this registry patch. The default setting is 1.3, which can be a bit washed out for some movies. Change the values to suit your setup. You need to go to the Color tab and click OK for the new settings to take effect.

Overclock Patch for 3dfxTools - (Not required for the latest driver sets)

This is now included in the zip files. Available for both v1.x & v2.x of 3dfxTools. To activate the Overclocking Tab double-click on Overclock.reg. Works with Banshee/V3/4/5. Overclock.exe is the utility to activate the control panel from 3dfx.
