Balbalita

28 October 2000. Biggest Rally held in Dagupan City! The March-Rally called by the Archbishop was held on this day. It may be considered as one of the biggest March-Rallies in Dagupan City. It is more than the Anti Cha-Cha rally held in Dagupan in 1998. There were so many who participated that the marchers occupied the whole stretch of Perez Blvd at one point of the march.March-Rally:Click for Bigger Picture

The march went from the St. John Evangelist parish to the Burgos St. and turned left to Perez Blvd. It then turned left again to Rizal St., then to AB Fernandez Ave.It ended at the Dagupan City Public Plaza.

The ecumenical prayers were led by a bishop of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente (IFI) more populary called the Aglipayan Church, a pastor of the United Church of Christ of the Philippines, and by Archbishop Oscar V. Cruz, DD.

The speakers of the Rally were the Chair of Promotion of Church People's Response-Pangasinan Chapter, Fr. Terry Revolido, a priest of the IFI, Congressman Benjie Lim, former Senator Bert Romulo, Congressman Ranjit Shahani, who announced that he was resigning from the majority party, LAMP, and called for Erap's resignation, Vice Governor Oscar Lambino, who said that he was one with the people in calling for the resignation of Erap. Msgr. Oscar V. Cruz also spoke to the people, and said that the real issue is :public office which is a public trust. This, the President has lost.

The seminarians of the Archdiocese of Lingayen-Dagupan acted as marshals and chanters of the march. They provided an intermission number and sang two songs.

It was participated in by about a hundred people who bang cans and pots, blew whistles, honk their carns and chanted "Erap Resign! Erap Resign!". It was pariticipated in  mostly by members of the Catholic Charismatic Movement of the Archdiocese in coordination with AGCO, the umbrella group that is spearheading the protest movement here in Dagupan City.

Another Noise barrage and rallies are scheduled again on 26 and 27 of October. This time the group will station themselves at three strategic points in Dagupan City: infront of the St. John the Evangelist Parish Church, at the rotunda Perez Blvd.-M.H. del Pilar St, and at the traffic junction of AB Fernandez Ave. - Arellano St.

These activities will culminate in a a March-Rally on 28 October, 1 PM. to call for the the resignation or impeachment of the President Joseph E. Estrada.

Rev. Fr. Mario R. Morales, who celebrated his 10th anniversary in the priesthood last 1 October, was most blessed to celebrate his ordination anniversary while he was on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land! Fr. Ayong was at the Holy Land from 1-12 October. Although the situation was tense when his group was in the Holy Land (lapud samay gulo ya nagagawa ed saman), he said it was still a most fruitful experience!

A Fact Finding team composed of representatives from various sectors, including the media, held a Fact Finding Mission at the San Roque Dam Project, in San Manuel and San Nicolas towns of Pangasinan from 8-10 October 2000. Rev. Fr. Oliver E. Mendoza represented the Archidiocese of Lingayen-Dagupan. The mission was sponsored by the Promotion of Church Peoples' Response -Pangasinan and the Commission of Social Action of the Diocese of Urdaneta under Rev. Fr. Cirilo P. Mayugba.

The fact-finding Mission participants numbered up to fifty individuals.  Residents of the affected areas, the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism, the Social Action Commission of the Diocese of Urdaneta, IBON Foundation, the Alyansa ng Magbubukid Sa Gitnang Luzon, the Center for Integrative Developmental Studies, the media and the Cordillera Peoples Alliance and its member organizations were among the participants.

The Most Rev. Oscar V. Cruz, DD, the Archbishop of Lingayen-Dagupan, in solidarity with the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) issued his Pastoral Call urging the Christian Faithful of the Archdiocese to pray and act. The letter came out on the 16 October 2000. With this letter, the Archbishop was the first bishop to call for the resignation or impeachment of the President after Cardinal Sin and the CBCP President Orlando Quevedo, OMI made the same call.
