Since some of you might not be familiar with some of the effects I'll be using, I've provided lots of screenshots. Therefore, I separated it into several pages to make it faster for each page to load.
Step 1 Open a new image in PSP, size 150 x 300 with transparent background.
Step 2 Set your foreground and background colors to white. Set your foreground style to null and your background style to color. Your color palette should look like this:

Step 3 Select your preset shape tool with the rounded rectangle. Use these settings:

Draw your post, it should look something like this. (Note: I put a blue layer below my post so it would show up easier for you.)

Step 4 Add a new raster layer and draw another rounded rectangle for the base of your post. Use the mover tool

to center it under the post:

Go to Layers > Merge > Merge visible so it's one piece.
Step 5 Go to Effects > Texture Effects > Sculpture and use the Mahagony preset, select OK:

Step 6 Use your selection tool (rectangle, feather=0, antialias checked) to select the body of the post.

With the ants moving, place your cursor inside the selected area and left-click once. It will bring in the ants to fit the post.

So that the rope can around the post better, we need to give it some room. Trust me, I tried it without doing this and it looks better this way :-). Go to Selections > Modify > Feather > 2 pixels > OK.
Step 7 Choose your picture tube tool:

and find your rope tube. Change the scale to 25. If you want larger rope, select a larger number.

Leaving the very top of the post alone, start drawing the rope across the post, going back and forth, and continue towards the base covering the wood completely. Because of the selection being active, your rope won't exceed the desired area.

When you have it covered, CTRL-D to deselect.

You could stop here and have a nice, functional scratching post. But I want a deluxe model!
