It was a perfect skipping stone, flat and smooth with absoloutely no bumps. "Ready, Kalimantan?" She inquired playfuly of her best friend, nudging him slightly in the ribs with her elbow. "Ready for what?" He teased. "Ready for me to beat you again in skipping stones? I haven't lost since we were what, thirteen Turns?" His green eyes flashed merrily as he said this last bit, and he returned the nudge. Taking a deep breath, he threw the stone out over the lake, and Sumatra watched as it skipped five times before sinking. It was probably one of Kalimantan's lowest numbers in a while. Taking a deep breath, she hefted the stone one last time, then sent it skimming across the lake. One, two, three, four, five, six. After the sixth skip, the stone sank sharply. "Ha!" Sumatra cried happily. "Okay, so you purposely did that, didn't you?" She asked, poking Kalimantan. "Ah.. Typical you." She added that last part as a smile spread across his face. "We both know you did that on purpose." "Well, normally we would of tied," Kalimantan replied unsurely, not knowing if Sumatra was going to fly at him because of that. The two had rarely even gotten in fights, but Kalimantan always felt horrible after they did. Sumatra shrugged slightly, upset by the Searchriders that had come to Scyjavor yesterday for Tarizal Weyr. They hadn't found one single Candidate. It was bad enough whenever you weren't Searched, but Sumatra took it as an in sult to Scyjavor Weyr, as if Tarizal's Searchriders had been saying that Scyjavor Weyrbrats simply weren't good enough to be Searched. She sighed. Ah, well, it was better to find good Candidates and have all of the dragons Impress than have horrible Candidates and a dragon go between. But they couldn't of all been that bad. "Cheer up," Kalimantan said. "There's that gold's clutch hatching soon, and they still need female Candidates. I'd stand, but I'd rather wait until a Searchrider comes. But you have a good chance, Sumatra. Just try." She smiled thoughtfuly. "You know, Kalimantan, I appreciate what you're trying to do, but I really don't think that I'm suited for standing here at Scyjavor. There should be other Searchdragons that will come, and I dunno..." She pondered something for a moment. "My mother and my father want me to Impress here, but I really don't want to. I don't know what it is, but..." Kalimantan nodded. "I know what you mean. I feel pretty much the same way, except my mother is a Lower Caverns worker. Because my father Impressed a white, he expects me to Impress high." He shrugged, then added, "I know that if I stand here, especially, he wants me to Impress a white. The truth of the matter is that I want a brown. Or a bronze, even a blue would be great. But a white just isn't for me." |
