SAMUEL
DOOLITTLE,s of Lieut. Samuel #46, b. 28 Feb1720WV; grew up at
Stafford Ct. and Palmer, Mass. The family had rem to Palmer, Mass in 1720 when
Samuel was an infant, and owned a good sized farm there. Shortly thereafter,
the father d suddenly, and in 1750 when he sold his interests in his father's
est at Palmer to his bro Ephriam, he was of Batemans Manor in Duchess Co. N.Y.
east of the lower Hudson River; Samuel m Susanna--------.
Possibly with the coming of the Revol and so much hostile activity in that
section he, then nearing three score, withdrew to less exposed surroundings,
for we find him and his family, about 1780, res at Shaftsbury, a few miles n of
Bennington in s.w. Vermont where he owned considerable farm lands. Shaftsbury
commenced to be settled about 1763 and Doolittle is mentioned among the
"early family names there". Among the grantees at Shaftsbury in list
of 1779 appears "Samuel Doolittle of Shaftsbury yeoman." He acquired
200 acres for $500. from Sam Robinson being lots 18 and 19 in 1st division. The
transfer was dated 19 Nov 1781.
On 23 apr 1782 Samuel Doolittle sold for L26a 60 acre strip on what was part of
east lot in above named tract to Samuel Doolittle, Jr. One ofthe witness was
Moses Doolittle. The two Samuels mentioned as of Shaftsbury, Vt. Samuel, Sr.
appeared 7 yrs later to acknowledge the above deed, in April 1789. He was then
in his 70th year.
Samuel Doolittle of Shaftsbury, yeoman, under date of 28 Dec 1784 conveys for L30
to Amos Burrows 50 acres in east end of lot 18 of 1st Division. On 3 Jan 1792
Samuel Doolittle of Shaftsbury "for love and good will I bear my son John Doolittle,"
deeds said John a 50 acre parcel with dwelling house and other buildings
thereon standing together with 80 acres more. Samuel appeared and acknowledge
deed for above 3 Jan 1793.
