" Savoy cinema, Limerick - exterior - early photo

Savoy Limerick, exterior.

This is a cinema once frequented by a real movie star, - the late Richard Harris. Local boy Richard Harris was once a regular patron of both the Savoy Cinema and the cinema cafe. Of course that was before he became worthy of reproduction on the big screen of the Savoy Cinema itself. Opened in December 1935, the first film to be shown was "Brewsters Millions". Designed by Leslie Norton, Architect. It had a Compton Organ. Closed and later sold on by Irish Cinemas in 1974, the cinema was intermittently used for cinema and stage shows afterward. In about 1988/89 the original Savoy was demolished and on the site was built a new development with six cinemas, 54 apartments, shopping and bar/restaurant facilities which retains the Savoy name. Update May 2005 - the "new" cinema complex is itself closed, planning permission for reconstruction as an apartment complex was applied for.

Babes in Toyland, the film shown on the marquee in the photograph below, was released in 1934.
