Versifying the Metaphor: Ben Jonson's "Song. That Women are but Mens shaddowes"

Ben Jonson’s “Song. That Women are bvt Mens shaddowes” has been often anthologized but seldom discussed. Most of the commentary that deals with it, the seventh poem in the collection The Forrest, published in the 1616 folio, is devoted either to its occasion or to its source. An understanding of both occasion and source is important to my interpretation of Jonson’s practice in this poem, and we might best begin our study with the background of its conception.
