THE PLAYERS

The Spanish Fed Cup Team has seen its most glorious years thanks to two players: Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario and Conchita Martínez, who have won the five Fed Cup titles for Spain.

Of course there were many other players that also made the teams, some of which, even had decisive victories, players like: Magüi Serna, Pili Pérez, Virginia Ruano-Pascual, Cristina Torrens-Valero or María Antonia Sánchez Lorenzo have also tasted the Fed Cup Glory.

THE UNQUESTIONABLES

I haven't been there. But I imagine choosing players to represent Spain is not that hard a job. Not when you have Arantxa and Conchita to choose from. They have leaded Spain in every single one of their victories.

From barely teenagers (two 17 years old girls in their first Fed Cup final in 1989), to fully experienced players, they have always managed to make Spain proud with their game and results.

Conchita Martínez

Talent galore. She represents the inspiration. The talent. But also the inconsistency. She went undefeated in Fed Cup 1995, leading Spain to its third consecutive title, and fourth of the decade.

Originally from Monzón (Huesca), Conchita Martínez has won the Fed Cup title five times.

Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario

Passion for playing. She represents the passion, the courage, the will to win. Whenever she's on court, she gives her all, and then, some.

With four Grand Slam titles to her name in singles (and nine more in doubles), she is the most successful Spanish tennis player ever.

Originally from Barcelona, Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario has won the Fed Cup title five times.

OTHER PLAYERS

They have been, most of the times, privileged espectators to Conchita and Arantxa awesome results. (Being what my friend Lynn - who can be very mean if she wants to - calls "The Cheerleaders").

But there is one exception: Magüi Serna, the only player, save Arantxa and Conchita, to ever obtain decisive points in a Fed Cup eliminatory in the way to one of Spain's five Fed Cup victories.

Pili Pérez

She was a member of the original team that defeated the US team in what was to be the first Fed Cup title for Spain ever. Pili Pérez has won the Fed Cup title one time.

Virginia Ruano-Pascual

Sometimes dubbed as a clay-court specialist, Virginia (best known as Vivi) has obtained some of the best results of her carreer in the WTA tour as doubles player (Winning a "double-double" at Roland Garros 2001, Doubles title with Paola Suarez and Mixed Doubles with Tomás Carbonell).

Originally from Madrid, Virginia Ruano-Pascual has won the Fed Cup title four times.

María Antonia Sánchez Lorenzo

Yet to give the best of herself, María Antonia had a good year in 1999, with a great result in the Australian Open (where she defeated Jana Novotna), she needs to find more consistency in her game for the upcoming seasons.

Originally from Madrid, María Antonia Sánchez Lorenzo has won the Fed Cup title one time.

Magüi Serna

She was the heroine and the revelation of the first eliminatory in the 1998 Fed Cup vs. Germany. Giving Spain two points with her singles victories, and helping Conchita, in the doubles, to obtain the definitive third point that gave Spain the qualification for the SF.

Originally from Gran Canaria, Magüi Serna has won the Fed Cup title 1 time.

Cristina Torrens-Valero

Another talented player that has obtained some of her best results in the years 1999 and 2000. Winning a WTA tour title for the first time in her carreer in 1999, and being part of the Spanish Fed Cup team in year 2000.

Originally from Pamplona, Cristina Torrens-Valero has won the Fed Cup title 1 time.

Gala León García

Another player that is knowing her best days late in her career.

In May, 2000, she won her first title in the WTA tour: the Madrid Open.

Originally from Madrid, Gala León has never won the Fed Cup title, she had played for Spain, but never in one of the winning teams.

María Ángeles Montolío

Yet another player that is living the best of her carreer from 1999 on. Breaking in to the top 50 for the first time in her carreer in June, 2000, and reaching highest rank in 2001 at No.30, having won her first two WTA titles in 2001.

Originally from Barcelona, María Ángeles Montolío has won the Fed Cup title 1 time.
