Kosovars return to their homes after months of refuge in the mountains. But in remote villages like Racaj landmines and lack of food and drinking water pose a challenge.

MORINA, Albania May 31, 1999 -- Kosovar Albanian men kept as POWs in Peja, Kosovo, cross into Albania as refugees after being released from prisons and forced to march into Albania by the Yugoslav army.

RAMNO, Macedonia, March 21, 1999, Wild Crossing -- Kosovar refugee families are taken down to Skopje on tractors and Red Cross vehicles from the mountains bordering Kosovo which they crossed in four days despite the snow.

BLACE, Macedonia, April 6, '99 -- A Kosovar refugee woman tries to walk out from the Macedonian police block, while barely able to stand up, as her relatives manage to get her out of the field. At the time in Blace several thousand Kosovar refugees were trapped and not allowed to leave before they register. Since most had their papers destroyed by the Serb police, registration was painstakingly slow. Meanwhile, health situation of the refugees at border crossings in Macedonia, at places such as Blace and Jasince were rapidly deteriorating.
