Open Visits at the Bakirkoy Penitantiary for Women and Children
Christmas week of 1999 passed as one of happiness and a break if little from the monotonous life of an inmate for those currently serving their sentences in prisons around Turkey.
If for a limited time they had the chance to meet with their families and loved ones. For a few hours had a chance to talk and get news from outide the prison walls.
The open visits were most animated and snug at the Bakirkoy penitentiary for women and children where the prisoners could freely sit around in groups, under the watchful eyes of the guardians.
Open visits are scheduled at the discretion of the government in power in Turkey, but are mostly scheduled around the holiday season, and during religious holidays following Ramadan.
