Lucky Ali is as cool as a cucumber and as fresh as the morning dew drops
on rose petals. This, despite the three-in-one role he plays in Kya Main
Ab Bhi Tumse Pyaar Karta Hoon. The strain of recording and composing songs
as a singer plus music director does not show on his face. Rather, it is
concentration which is writ large across his demeanour as he imparts the
final touches to a qawalli which he has composed for the film. "Actually,
Junoon is supposed to render the qawalli, but the Pakistani group has run
into visa problems," explains Lucky, "We
might go ahead and record the qawalli with Adnan Sami." This is the
music director in Lucky Ali. Soon, the singer in him takes over. "Tell
you what, this is the first qawalli which I have composed in my life. What
if I sing it?" he asks. Yes, what if? Bobby Khan, the director of
Kya Main Ab Bhi Tumse Pyaar Karta Hoon, is present at the recording: "Kya
Maqsood bhai (Lucky’s real name), you do not render the qawalli in the
film; we need a different voice." Lucky has an answer ready. "But
what if I change my voice and sing it?" he questions. Everyone at
the recording studio bursts into laughter. To record and compose the music
for Kya Main Ab Bhi Tumse Pyaar Karta Hoon, Lucky went to where his music
first began — London. Working with his brother-in-law Mike, who recorded
and arranged the music for his first album Sunoh, Lucky is currently
dubbing songs in India and plans to do the final mixing in Los Angeles,
where he will be stationed for a month while shooting for Sanjay Gupta’s
Kaante. Lucky’s interest in music dates back to the time when he was 13
and his mother presented him with a guitar. But it was the acting bug
which drew him to the film industry. The man has had his share of exposure
to reel life through Shyam Benegal, but his range was limited to art
films. In his new avatar, of course, Lucky combines his passion for music
with his acting skills. The second son of comedian Mehmood, Lucky Ali was
born as Maqsood Mehmood Ali. But he was soon renamed Lucky after Mehmood’s
popularity at the box-office coincided with his birth. What’s in a name,
some might well say. And they might well be right. For, Lucky by any other
name would sound just as sweet!
