Branson and Memorial Day, May 2000

Coon Rapids, IA, Cemeteries

Memorial Day week has been a great travel time for us in recent years. In 1998, we went to Alaska, to visit Nancy's brother, Joel, and his family. Last year, we were in
Colorado, celebrating our 40th anniversary. This year, we spent a few days in Branson with our Daughter, Allison, and, spent Memorial Day in Iowa, visiting cemeteries and Nancy's family there.
The Sunday before Memorial we visited the Coon Rapids, Carroll Co, IA, cemeteries where our closest family members who have died have been laid to rest, most recently, of course, my Mom, Eileen Kinnick Smith Olson, last summer:

Last fall, we decided to get our own stone placed on our lots which are just to the left of my parents plots:

The top picture was supposed to include our stone (below), but the nice old man who took it, missed the stone (and got a lot of trees)! We put our Appril's little bronze plaque, that was flat on the ground, to the left of above, on the back of our stone. It was getting covered with grass. Now it can easily be seen...if you walk around back!

This is the Union Twp cemetery a few miles east of Coon Rapids, on "old 141." The Coon Rapids cemetery is along the same road, on the east edge of town. Nancy's Dad is buried there, under the shade of a hugh tree:

On the left is the Rees stone, she was Irene Bolger, aunt of Glenn, Nancy's dad.

We also visited the old Smith plot up on the side hill:

We put some red and white flowers up by the name stone rather than on the individual ones down in front. The next picture is taken standing behind that Smith name stone, down the hill a tad, toward the Wilson plot, including Nancy's grandma Hazel and her parents (Norman and Mary Wilson) and sister, Rhoda:

We also stopped by the Thomas plots, noting some walls need shored up, and, the Kinnick (Bill's grandfather Paul, and grandmother, Dorothy (Sorensen) plot, also including my great-grandfather Sorensen, beside it:

We drove past the Glidden cemetery a couple of times, with their many American flags. We didn't stop, because we don't have close relatives there, that we neede to visit this trip.
