Pennsylvania Genealogy Trip, May 2000

Thomas Butler Gunshop in Carlisle, Cumberland County, PA

After the Spring Semester ended, we took a five day trip to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to view some ancestral sites that we had each studied a lot, to see if there were more information there to be found, but, mostly, just to walk the ground they walked on... we were not to be disappointed!
Bill had come to Carlisle to see the Gunshop and to confirm there was no more information on his 4th Great-Grandfather, John Butler. Both happened!

An email had set up the visit.... Steve Reutter had seen my "Fighting Bulters" web page and sent a nice note. He lives on east High Street, the official Pennsylvania historical marker of the Thomas Butler Gunshop is on west High Street:

James Butler, the father of the Thomas Butler, above, was the 6th great-grandfather of Bill, so, James, the brother of this Thomas was the 5th great-grandfather, and the father of John Butler, for whom Bill was really seeking some information.

To put the sign and the gunshop in perspective, Nancy is standing near the sign on the north side of High Street. The Gunshop is located on Dickinson Ave, the small street that runs along the back of this lot. We should give some attention to George's Sub Shop, because that was the reference Steve gave us to notice the sign....

Now, just to the left of Nancy's head, here, you may see there is a very thin alley between the buildings - let's take a peek:

Way back there, on the right, you can see the roof of the gunshop.

But, first, let's move a little closer....

Ah, there it is behind Nancy. A real neat stone building!

Time for me to get back in the picture! Later, we found there is apparently someone living in the building....

From the front...

Pretty neat old building, filled with history... some references:
