The Workshop at the Swedish Hotel de Marle
facility
Our Swedish hosts provided wonderful bus
transportation for us to each of the several activities, including
the workshop events, as well as the two evening meals. Here, our
leader, Ulf, leads us onto the bus, outside the Holiday Inn, heading
for the workshop:
The workshop meetings were held daily at
the fine Eighteenth Century Hotel de Marle which, if I understood
correctly, the Swedish government has owned since 1965 and maintained
as an educational and cultural center in Paris. Following is a sketch
from a piece of literature we were provided:
Ulf, again, entering the front gate of
the center, as others cross the interior courtyard, to enter the
center itself:
Our workshops were held on the first
floor, behind the window you can see in the middle. Following are two
pictures of the second floor reception area:
On the wall immediately behind the person
taking this picture was a portrait, one of the most beautiful I have
ever seen, leading into the library. It was hard not to stare at the
eyes in this portrait, amazing:
They provided a buffet lunch each day on
the back patio. This is a photo of the back of the center, from the
literature.
While we were there, there was an
educational, scientific exhibit for children set up in the back
lawn/court. We all found the exhibits fascinating. Here, Dave Tansik
(USA, University of Arizona) (white shirt) examines one. In the
background, Robert Johnson (UK, University of Warwick), right, and
Jan Mattson (Denmark, Roskilde University), red sweater around the
neck, left, have a chat.
The workshop focused on design issues for
service organizations. Dave Tansik and I presented our research work
on using job scriting for service design. An expanded, later version
of this material became a chapter of a new book: New Service
Debelopment: Creating Memorable Experiences, James A. Fitzsimmons and
Mona J. Fitzsimmons, Editors, by Sage Publications.
