The Devil's Due
By Billy Burrew
Chapter 1: A Cunning Plan
He sat back on his throne and glowered into the bubbling
waters of the pool before him. In his oracle pool, He could
view all the happenings in the world of man, with a simple
wave of his hand. What He was watching now was sickening
him. He watched as the figure of an immensely fat man danced
around his bedroom in almost giddy glee.
"Oh God!", Lou cried as he got up, "I'm
alive! I'm alive! I'm a changed man. I'll change even more
too! I won't ever go back to the way I was. I will change
the path of those boys. I won't split them up or let them
split up
I promise you that Patrick!"
Lou walked over to his desk and gasped as he saw a note
laying on top of the pile, etched in black ink.
Lou-
Keep your promise
.Remember what I have shown
you, past, present, and future
I am the guardian angel
for these boys and I can see everything that goes on from
up here
Don't make me have to come back and visit you
again!
-Patrick
He waved his hand and the images in the Oracle pool blurred
and faded away.
"And thus falls Lou Pearlman....what a complete wuss!"
He spat out, the disgust evident. "I should have known
old tubby was a bleeding heart. Never trust a mortal man
to do the Devil's work."
He stalked around his throne room, grumbling curses under
his breath as the flames around him licked higher in response
to his anger level.
"Those five....by all rights they should be mine....they're
filled with all kind of sins and foibles. I should own their
souls...but NO! That meddling angel Patrick...he's watching
them now...and he'll stop me from gaining them at every
coming."
He sat back down on his throne and moaned. "How do
I get past him? There's got to be some weakness there. Something...some
kind of weakness I can use."
He started as the Oracle pool swirled to life, bubbling
high and settling onto a scene, before the one he had just
watched...one that didn't immediately provide him an answer
to his request.
Tears filled both Patrick's and Lance's eyes as the
two finished the dance. Patrick looked up behind Lance and
nodded for Justin to come over. As Justin circled his arms
around Lance's waist, Patrick's form began to dissolve.
He looked down at Lance and smiled slightly
"I'll always love you Lance. You and Justin take
care of each other.",
"See ya around you guys", Patrick said to
the room and the guys smiled through their tears.
"Patrick
.", Lance cried sadly as Patrick's
light dissipated.
"No goodbye's Lance
.I'll see ya around.",
Patrick said and then he was gone.
Lance smiled and nodded his head, "See ya around
Patrick."
Patrick stood crying as he watched Lance for a few seconds
more before the scene again faded. Lance knew only a glimmer
of the love that Patrick held in his heart for him
and
it was better that he never know any more than that, since
he was now gone from Lance's world. It was a difficult fact,
but one that Patrick had known all too well before he had
died.
"Good Job!", said a voice from behind him
suddenly.
"I guess so.", Patrick sighed, then turned
to look at Ebeneezer Scrooge.
"You really loved him, huh?", Scrooge said
softly.
"More than he shall ever know
more than I
could ever admit.", Patrick said sadly.
He sat and pondered the scene, letting it play over and
over again as He considered the significance of it and why
the Oracle pool had chosen that particular scene and shown
it to him.
Suddenly, a plan of such cunning hit him and He began to
grin maliciously.
"Oh YES...that could just work. I'd get them all...it'll
be so easy...I'll get all their souls and if I played it
right...I'd bring about the first fall of an angel from
Grace since my own, back in the early days of creation."
His terrible laughter echoed off the walls of the throne
room as He got up and strode over to the ledge that overlooked
the pit of perdition, He smiled as he watched his minions,
busily casting wayward souls of the damned into the pits
bottomless depths.
He clapped his hands together twice, the sound that issued
forth was much akin to that of crashing thunder.
"To zaèeti zdaj!"<It begins
now!> He roared and immediately five broad bolts of lightning
struck the floor in five corners surrounding him. The electricity
created a pentagram of raw power on the floor under his
feet. The power around him grew exponentially, spreading
upwards like a luminous fog from the floor, enveloping him
entirely. Seconds later, the power dissipated, and He was
gone.
