Museum's collection comprises of items of historical and cultural
interest from both the Pre-lslamic and Islamic eras of Maldivian
history. These include various archaeological finds from local
excavations such as the stone head of Buddha found in Thoddoo
Island in 1958 AD. There is also a coral slab from around the
ninth or tenth century with an inscription in Proto-Nagarian script
on it. This is quite interesting as this is the oldest writing
found in the Maldives so far.
The collection also includes original costumes,
jewellery, weapons and other memorabilia of different Maldivian
kings, queens and members of the royal family. One of the most
important exhibits in the present collections, is a wooden panel
from the earliest structure of the Male' Friday Mosque.(Hukuru
Miskiiy) dating from 1332 AD (737 AH). A lot of effort is done
by the Maldivian Centre for Linguistic and Historical research
to expand the present collection.
This is one of the two wooden planks taken from
the famous gate of the Sultan's Palace (Hiththan Dhoroashi) when
the Palace was demolished.
