About the arms:
The coat of arms as registered under the Heraldry Act incorporates the (non-heraldic) badge of the old Pretoria Technical College (the central roundel). The description provided by the technikon does not include a blazon. Starting, unusually, with the motto and the crest, it reads:

“The motto PROSPERITAS PER PERITIAM (Prosperity through skill) forms the base and underpins the symbolism of the coat of arms.

“The red castle on a silver helm connects us to the Capital City of Pretoria where Technikon Pretoria is situated.

“The circle mounted on a black shield is an image of perfection, strength, unity and reciprocity.

“The steps in the circle depict growth, and are shown on a black background depicting a solid basis.

“The gold (yellow) steps rise to the red, which is the most positive colour.

“The single silver (white) block represents the individual who is confronting a growing challenge.

“The three clovers, also known as the tri-mount, is an exclusive symbol allocated to Technikon Pretoria by the Bureau of Heraldry.”

About the technikon:
The Pretoria Technical College was founded in 1906.

The institution became a technikon in 1979, and today has around 30 000 students, making it the largest residential technikon in Southern Africa. These figures (as at January 2001) are made up from 25 000 students at the technikon’s various campuses, and a further 8 000 at other institutions which collaborate with the technikon.

The old campus in Church Street, Pretoria, now houses the Arts and Natural Sciences faculties, while a new main campus has been built at Technikonrand, 96 ha in extent and 6 km west of the city centre. Satellite campuses have also been established at Witbank, Nelspruit, and KwaMhlanga in Mpumalanga, and in Polokwane (Pietersburg) in Limpopo Province.
