Art Blakey will always be know as "Art Blakey and The Jazz Messagers"...Throughout his career, his roots to Be-Bop has been the driving force behind The Messages...Many musicians have passed through the hands of Art Blakey and have later become legends by there own right..Such was the case with Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, and Wayne Shorter...In the early to mid 1960's, this handful of musicians rose to Hall of Fame status as being Art Blakey's Jazz Messages...In the decades to follow, a new breed of Messagers would eventually take the stage..Mulgrew Miller, Javon Jackson, Bobby Watson, and Donald Harrison, all made their mark as Blakey's Jazz Messagers.. Blakey never lost site of his Be-Bop roots...His attempts at the freer Jazz forms were somewhat successful but they were short lived..Blakey would later return to his straight forward style only to captivate a new generation of fans..

John Coltrane took his music to the extremes of which many hailed as genius..Many did not share the same feeling towards his work, but all admired his distinctive tone and lyricism...Coltrane lived most of his life in Philadelphia, but was a native of North Carolina... As a young man, he played in the big bands and enjoyed a lengthy stay, playing alto saxophone, with Dizzy Gillespie... At age 28 he joined Miles Davis..It was at this time, Coltrane would now move to the top ranks among Jazz Artist...His forceful style which reached beyond some critic's understanding would soon become the driving force of The John Coltrane Quartet...It was in 1960 that musicians, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones bought about a New Age of Jazz...His use of modes, scales, tonal platforms and the use of the soprano saxophone launched a half decade of new and exiting music..Avant Guard had arrived and later the group would include Phoaoah Sanders, Rashied Ali and Alice Coltrane (His Wife)...In 1967, Coltrane passed away..But an era filled with change and question, would continue on...

Wes Montgomery was considered by some, as the greatest guitarist of all times..It wasn't until he left Indianapolis in 1959 that that he would gain national exposure.. Throughout his early career he would perform locally at night as well as work an during day to make ends meet..Sleeping was not a part of his life for he had a large family to support, and he was a dedicated family man...His claim to fame was all to short lived when he suffered and died from a heat attract at age 43... Wes's style can best be describe as mellow..He was self taught and never used a pick..He objected to its harshness and preferred the tone his thumb could provide... His mellow tone and use of octaves would be the formula for his success..His fans loved his sound and the critics raved his technique.. Wes Montgomery left us all to soon, but he left behind a music that guitarist will appreciated forever..Wes finally would take his place along side of Jimmy Raney, Barney Kessel, Jim Hall, Kenny Burrell, and perhaps Andres Segovia and Hank Garland.
