Scurvy Dog - Howling at the Moon

was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1986. The band came about as a result of the musical re-association of singer Mic Bowers and guitarist Marc Tracey, who originally played together in early Australian bands in the 1970's.

In February 1998 recordings began for the Live CD 'Howlin' at the Moon'.  Simon 'Bonzo' Barker rejoined the lineup in March 1998, making the current lineup complete.

Recordings continued through April 98, with the final tracks being mastered in May 98. The tracks that didn't make the final list were compiled onto two CD's and produced as DogHouse Sessions 1 and 2. The band took a brief break while the CD was being designed and produced, and resumed rehearsals honing the live set for imminent gigs to promote the CD. Recordings and rehearsals continued through August 98, with DogHouse Sessions 3 and 4 being produced. See their homepage

James T and Last Volunteers - 'First Up' and 'Sharpen Up'

First Up was recorded in in 1997 - Sharpen Up in 1999. Apart from James T vocals and harmonica, Gary Lothian is on lead guitar, Jimmy Bee on bass and Nick Churkin on skins.. Not a lot to say about this bannd except they had a lot to live up to with their entertaining live gigs and their first superb first CD. Sharpen Up has exceeded the title, this band gets better and better. Its a must for any collector and fan of this genre in music.

Formed in summer 1994 by singer/songwriter Kevin Thorpe, who in 1993 had won the Best Acoustic Blues Song at the Great British R & B Festival with the song Holy Water. Lapis is an Adelaide, South Australia, group of four musicians, Tina Wiley - with vocals and guitar, Brett Monten on guitar, bass, vocals and  harmonica, Wayne Davies on  guitar, bass, vocals with unfettered enthusiasm. Finally Scott Davies on  drums and vocals.  The band gradually grew from the duo in 1994 of "Wild Dove" (Tina and Brett). The influences of band members are varied, but the underlying soul of the band is Blues and Rock. Lapis has a large stable of original songs and is currently busily rehearsing in preparation for recording a debut CD. 
The name Lapis came about from the band's musical roots, being Blues and Rock - Lapis Lazuli is a blue gemstone. CD and Cassette copies of their Demo are available for $12.00 and $8.00 respectively, plus postage costs.

This is a well bound and printed A4 sized paperback publication, which is well worth the cost. It seems to concentrate on American and British blues releases. I think it could be improved with some biblios, including other countries CD releases, further references to magazines and perhaps Internet sites. I have no hesitation in recommending it .

Michael Brown

Michael introduced himself to blues only 2 years ago, although he has been learning the guitar for five . Michael is taught and encouraged by Chris Finnen, also James Mesdon of 'The Healers'. Michael looks and plays with enormous style and emotion and performs like an old hand with the best musos that Adelaide can offer. Chris Finnen said recently;

"I warmly embrace the opportunity to share music with Michael. I have to listen harder, and feel inspired to play better as a result of his youthful enthusiasm for music. Supro
The long-awaited debut release by Supro is nearing reality. The album of all original material has been recorded, with the band now exploring their release / distribution options. Supro is Dominic Turner and Peter Burgess, both of the Backsliders, with Alison Penney on keyboards, who also plays with the Hippos and the Midnight Ramblers.

Another recent Melbourne based recording that has generated more than a little curiosity is the self titled recording by 12 Bars From Mars. This outfit are Geoff Wright on guitar & vocal with Glenn Suckling - bass, Trevor Courtney - drums, Mick O'Connor - keyboards with both Ian Collard and Les Stackpoole as guests on harmonica and guitar respectively. Glenn Suckling can no longer be cited as a member of "12 Bars From Mars". The expected launch date is mid January with plans for am American tour during July August.

Tracy Nelson - Move On (Rounder CD 3143)

 Ever since her work with Mother Earth in the 60's, she's effortlessly covered the blues, country, and soul in a series of fine records including this one. The backup band is top notch and includes more than a few stars, and like most of her music, is an seamless blend of blues, country, soul and rock. Her voice is as powerful as any gospel singer with an emotional level that can only come from the heart. The opener is a great funky rocker, with a rocking slide guitar called, Living On Love, Good To You Baby and Got Me Goin are also great songs in the same mold. As with any Nelson record, the ballads are often the high point, and Tonight I'll Dream is an achingly good one, with a gospel feel that probably is a real show stopper live. 

Editor:  When I think of great women singers, I've always included Nelson, and I'd recommend this CD to anyone who wants to hear some of the best blues and blues rock in recent times.

A relatively new player of the Sydney Blues circuit. They adopted a serious attitude toward their approach last year. Former Cigar's Mitch Grainger and Declan Kelly have been joined by Kara Grainger - guitar & vocal, Rowan Lane bass and percussionist of some repute Danny Guerrero. Papa Lips recorded a cassette at Sydney's famed Studio 301 which unfortunately is no Longer available. Harmony recorded last September is still available:

Hoy Hoy

Their debut album, Don't Tell Frank was launched last year in Australia. With performances in Bendigo, Melbourne & Geelong, Hoy Hoy will no doubt find some enthusiastic response from the eastern State crowds. Their contributions to the Blues Club Records Deep South compilation have all been readily received.

JustaBoutEverything  -  I'll Change
Known as JBE were an enormous hit at the  Annual Victor Harbor Folk Festival . Their music is often described as gravel burning acoustic music.This band hails from South Australia led and managed by their vocalist and songwriter Chris Davies, their music is rooted in blues, rock, folk, jazz and the singer/songwriters tradition.They have recorded several CD's, their latest recorded earlier this year is considered by many as their best, entitled 
'I'll Change'. A very professional and proficient band. Julian Barnett, the bands rhythm guitarist takes the solos and  is outstanding,  playing with passion and fire, many consider him amongst the best, if not the best, guitarist in SA.

Slap 'N' The Cats  -   Hot Rods 'N' Haircuts

I'm casually referred to as SLIM (Due to my streamlined cat like frame ??? :))) from a rockabilly three piece out of city on the South West coast of Victoria called Warrnambool,  Windy Warrnambool. 

 I've been playing in bands for about 16 years.  A mixture of stuff.  I'm an unsatiable discoverer of rockabilly,  hillbilly,  blues and rock-n-roll stuff that may add to my own style of rockabilly playing and even singing.    Rob,  that's who we call Slap  and I,  and a drummer ... called Slam formed a band called  'The Runaway Boys'.   We decided to change our name to Slap 'N' The Cats  when we put out a limited distribution of a cassette called Gettin' Smart, five rockabilly covers and two originals. 

We've recorded again releasing an album this year Hot Rod's 'N' Haircuts with a new 
drummer Sledgy which is a conglomeration of originals that show what we're like as a band at present.  We still pump out a heap of old rockabilly covers live,  but love to experiment blending this stuff into our originals. 

 We go off playing !  Throwing in as many of the antics a good rockabilly band can whenever we can!  We always look foward to playing...  even though ... 'cause we're is  "THE BUSH"  ....  we don't get pomps, hoppin' rockers 'n hot rods ever week !!  But I tell ya'all people down our way they now know what ROCKABILLY is! 

Outside of South Australia, little has been heard of the Streamliners since their appearance on the Deep South compilation CD of 1994 which has proven to have become a catalyst for many of the bands from that state. Only Greg Baker's Blues Party is yet to produce an album since the release of Deep South. The Streamliners are Nick Kipridis - guitar, slide & vocal, Dennis Kipridis - bass, Sav Palaktsoglou - guitar with Steve Peterka on drums.

Turning Blue - Australia

Since releasing their debut CD 'Night Time' in 95 'Turning Blue' have been one of the busiest blues bands in the state. 

They have been consistently touring around Victoria and interstate and have found the time to record a new CD titled Years & Years. Their new CD includes 13 original tracks all written by vocalist, guitarist Brian Fraser . It will be distributed by Black Market Music, and was recorded at Soundtrax 919 studio in Ballarat. 

Turning Blue's live shows are fast becoming legendary and have been drawin large crowds where ever they perform, their infectious style of blues and entertaining stage show is a must to see.  Live in Tassie
Turning Blue from Geelong is currently in the process of mixing and mastering tapes made from their last two tours of Tasmania, in preparation for the release of a live album. Featuring some new material, some favourites from their previous CDs, and some covers.  Their album is expected to be titled Live in Tassie and should be available mid- September.They are now back into their regular heavy touring schedule of the country, with new bassist Grant Smith. Grant a highly talented young musician who adds a new dimension to the band's sound, much to the delight of crowds everywhere. Catch them soon at a venue near you.

Began performing in the mid 60's, playing bass piano & guitar in various bands. 
Tony has been entertaining crowds for years with an impressive repertoire from Robert Johnson to Hank Williams, yet it is his original compositions that hold the key to his popularity. Equally at home at the local hotel as he is at major festivals where he often plays, always impressive, never offensive, delivering his country style Blues accompanied with nought but his trusty guitars. 
Now, after what many consider an overly prolonged period, Tony is to finally release a CD. The material for "Chilla" as the album is to be known, was all recorded live at "Muddy Waters" cafe in Windsor, Melbourne. The track selection has been made and the CD launch will no doubt be one of this years most heralded events. Tony's previous releases are Drunkabelly's Dream and The Empress and I  Both available on cassette.
